Joe Dodoo hopes he and Martyn Waghorn can hit the goal trail at Ibrox after the former Leicester team-mates were reunited in the Rangers forward line.

The 21-year-old marked his Light Blues bow in style on Friday night as he scored in the final seconds against East Stirlingshire to give Mark Warburton’s side a 3-0 Betfred Cup win.

Dodoo made the move north of the border last week after leaving the King Power Stadium and will now look to make his mark in the Premiership.

Former Foxes forward Waghorn has two goals from his two appearances so far this term as he looks to maintain his impressive strike rate from last season.

And Dodoo is determined to follow suit and play a key role for Warburton’s side as Rangers set their sights on the Premiership title.

He said: "It's great to get off the mark. I am looking to play, to get some minutes and I was happy to play 30 minutes on Friday night. It was a good win for us as well.

"As a striker you always want to get off the mark early. It's a new team, a new style of play and you have to get used to that.

“So it's a good start for me. It's always good for confidence to get a goal early and kick on.

"I don't want to be on the bench. I have come to Rangers to play. I have come here to work hard and earn my place.

“Everyone who comes in here has to work hard every day if they want a place in the team.

"You have to compete with your teammates and earn the right to start.

"I was at Leicester City with Martyn Waghorn. I was a young one back then. I played with him quite a lot and he is a great guy.

“He is one of the players who has made it so easy for me to come up to Rangers. I'm looking forward to playing with him all season.

“Martyn is off the mark for the season already and now I am off the mark already too. So we need to continue working hard for the team. The team comes first.

"But Martyn did really well last season scoring 28 goals and that was fantastic.

“Was his success one of the reasons I came up here? Yes. But I am here to help the team and the team will help me improve too.”

Dodoo became the ninth signing of the summer for boss Warburton when he put pen-to-paper on a four-year deal with Rangers last week.

The England youth international made four appearances for Claudio Ranieri’s side last term and spent time on loan at League One Bury.

And he has no regrets about leaving Leicester just weeks after City wrote their name in the record books and became Premier League champions.

Dodoo said: "Was there a temptation to stay there given they have Champions League football? Yes of course there was.

"But I need to be playing first team football. To be fair, the manager and the staff here have persuaded me that here is where I need to be.

"The players have made it really easy to settle in. To have a manager willing to teach me the right way of playing football, I couldn't say no to that!

"Yes of course, I learned a lot from these guys (at Leicester). These players have ability and they work hard and they have a great bond. They are all such great friends and that's what made it easy for them to achieve what they did.

"They fought for each other all season long. It was great to see how they acted about the place and to learn from them.

"But I didn't need to learn from anyone that hard work is essential if you want to succeed. I have always know that. I didn't need to be taught that.”
