I was disappointed to see Brian McClair leave his role as Performance Director and now the Scottish FA have a really big decision to make for the future of our game.

Brian left Manchester United, where he had been for the majority of his life, to take up the Hampden role and I thought it was a good appointment at the time.

He had success at Old Trafford working with the kids but clearly his strength is on the park and coaching players. There was more to this position than that, though.

You need someone who can go around the clubs and into meetings at all levels of the game and present your plan for the future. That obviously wasn’t working out for Brian.

We want as many kids to get a good start in the game as possible and we want to see as many young players coming through the ranks and into the national side as possible.

That process has to start somewhere, though, and there has to be a vision from the SFA. They need to get the appointment of Brian’s successor right.

His strength was on the training ground and not in the boardroom. We need someone who can do both, someone who knows the game, knows Scottish football and can put his ideas across so that people buy into it and can put his plans into action.

I am sure there will be a lot of candidates for the job and if there is someone Scottish that stands out then that would be great.

But we have had Mark Wotte in there before and there is no reason why we can’t have another foreigner as Performance Director. The important thing is to get the right man and to make it work this time.

We all know there are problems in Scottish football. Hopefully the next person at Hampden will be the one that can help fix it for the good of our game and the national team.
