MOTHERWELL’S in-demand star Marvin Johnson has declared he is in no rush to leave Fir Park despite interest from a host of English clubs.

The Well wide man has been in sensational form so far in the Betfred Cup, grabbing two goals, two assists and two man-of-the-match awards in his last two games.

Unsurprisingly, these achievements, along with his trickery, pace and ingenuity have not gone unnoticed.

The 25-year-old has been linked with Bristol City, Leeds United, Queens Park Rangers and Oxford United while his manager Mark McGhee admitted earlier this week that he is ‘astonished’ nobody has yet swooped for his prize asset.

However, speaking exclusively to SportTimes, Johnson, who has another two years left on an extension signed last summer, has reassured the Well support that he is enjoying his football more than ever and is fully focused on fulfilling his Fir Park potential.

“You’ve got to enjoy your football,” he explained. “I’m comfortable and settled and I’m enjoying every single time we go out for a game. Every day in training I’m enjoying it.

“Some games are hard but you get on with it. At times there’s a little bit between the lads but off the pitch you are all friends. You just want the best out of each other.

“I signed an extension last year because I enjoy it here, I wouldn’t have signed otherwise and I’d have tried to get out.

“I love it here. We have a great set of lads and great coaching staff. It’s a fantastic club that I settled in straight away to. I feel at home here.”

The former Kidderminster Harrier is no stranger to praise or indeed attention. During the early years of his career he was the subject of interest from both Burnley and Crewe, only for nothing to materialise.

He acknowledges that back then the speculation had a detrimental impact on his game, but with maturity and experience he has learned to deal with it.

“I’ve had interest in me before when I was a lot younger and it used to turn my head a little bit,” said Johnson. “Then it got in the way of me playing. That’s why I’ve had a little bit more slow progress over my career.

“Now I just hear it. Yeah, it’s a confidence boost but it isn’t done. Teams can be interested in you but it doesn’t mean that they are going to sign you.

“You just have got to keep your head in the game. You can’t tell what is going to happen in the future, you can’t afford to drop off on your game.

“It’s also nice to hear the manager thinks highly of me. I think highly of myself. You have got to have self-belief and confidence to try and achieve at the highest level.

“All I want to do is progress in my career. I’m here for a reason and I’ll keep working hard. The season is around the corner and we have got to work hard to start it sharply and bright.”

Johnson’s confidence should not be misinterpreted as cockiness. The talented winger looks a player comfortable in the knowledge that he is in the form of his life, but equally content in admitting there is still more to come from him.

Speaking ahead of today’s final Group F game in the Betfred Cup away to Stranraer, he said: “I’m just staying focused. As soon as I go on to the pitch I try and give 100%. I’m not afraid to try something so if it doesn’t come off I’ll make that extra sprint to make up for it.

“I’m trying to add a lot more goals to my game as you can see. I’m trying hard to work hard to get into those areas and score goals.

“I feel great. It helps to have a great set of lads around you. I played up front against East Stirling. I can learn a lot by playing with Scott McDonald. He’s a different kind of player to me. I’m quicker whereas he’s intelligent and smarter in the box.

“I can learn a lot from him in terms of where I need to be and the areas that I’m going to score.

“I feel I take each and every game as it goes and that I’m getting better and better. It’s still pre-season and I’m feeling fitter.”
