RANGERS missed out on a European Cup Final place against the famous Real Madrid side at Hampden in 1960 when they were beaten in the semi-final by Eintracht Frankfurt...

BIG STUART (Cathcart) – It's well known that Rangers lost 12-4 on aggregate to German side Eintracht Frankfurt in 1960, but am I right in thinking that Rangers inflicted a similar defeat on another German side the following year?

You are correct. In season 1960-61 Rangers made it all the way to the European Cup-Winners' Cup Final.

Along the way they met Borussia Monchengladbach, winning 3-0 away from home and 8-0 at Ibrox.

Scorers in a one-sided but extremely rough first leg were: Millar, Scott and McMillan and the goals in an altogether more peaceful affair in Glasgow came from Baxter, Brand (3), Millar (2), Davis and an o.g. from Pfeiffer.

The Rangers team for both games was Niven, Shearer, Caldow, Davis, Paterson, Baxter, Scott, McMillan, Millar, Brand, Wilson.

Rangers went on to beat Wolves 3-1 in the semi-final but lost home and away in the two-legged final to Fiorentina (4-1 on aggregate).

PAUL BYERS (Paisley) – Can you list all of Celtic’s record signings and fees paid since 1990?

Not all transfer fees have been officially disclosed by the club meaning that there may be some discrepancies; however the following fees have been reported by several outlets.

John Collins became Celtic’s first million pound player in July 1990 when signed from Hibs.

This was broken a year later when £1.1million was paid to secure the services of Tony Cascarino from Aston Villa.

Stuart Slater was signed from West Ham for £1.5million in August 1992, which was in turn broken by the £1.75million signing of Phil O’Donnell from Motherwell in September 1994.

July 1995 saw Andreas Thom being signed from Bayer Leverkusen for £2.2million, before £3.5million was paid to Bolton for Alan Stubbs in May 1996, also the reported fee paid to Croatia Zagreb for Mark Viduka in November 1998.

Eyal Berkovic became Celtic’s record signing in July 1999 when £5.75million was paid to bring him from West Ham, before being usurped by £6million pound man Chris Sutton when he joined from Chelsea in July 2000.

Celtic are also reported to have spent £6million bringing John Hartson to the club from Coventry in August 2001.
