Mark Warburton hopes to add to Rangers squad before Premiership clash with Dundee

The Ibrox boss remains in the market for two more additions to further bolster his Light Blues ranks for a crack at the top flight title this term.

Warburton has brought nine players to Ibrox so far this summer but hopes to recruit a defender and a striker before the end of the transfer window to provide extra competition for places in key areas.

The 53-year-old saw his side progress to the quarter-finals of the League Cup with a 5-0 win over Peterhead last night thanks to a Clint Hill double, strikes from Niko Kranjcar and Joe Dodoo and a Fiacre Kelleher own goal.

Rangers head to Dens Park looking for their first Premiership win of the new campaign on Saturday and, when asked if he was any closer to bringing players in, Warburton said: “Yes. Maybe [before the weekend], fingers crossed, we'll see.

“Work is going on so hopefully we will make some progress. But you saw tonight the strength and depth of the squad, we made six changes and we looked good.”

After dropping two points on their top flight return against Hamilton at the weekend, Rangers got back to winning ways with a comfortable cup triumph against the Blue Toon.

A fine strike from Kranjcar and Hill’s first goal for the Light Blues all-but clinched the win before Warburton’s side eased over the line in the second half.

Warburton said: “It was a good performance, always difficult to beat any team but I thought it was a professional job.

“More clinical in front of goal, got some rewards and created a lot more chances as well.

“I was pleased all over the park; Lee Hodson stepping in, Jordan Rossiter was excellent tonight, Joe Dodoo offered us something different up front in terms of running channels. I thought it was a job well done.

“Great technique from Niko for the first. Clint showed good feet for the second for a big centre half and a dominant header for his second goal and was on a hat-trick, which I never thought I’d be saying.

“It was good to see, it was a good job well done. Peterhead are a resilient team, so it was pleasing.”

After topping Group F with four wins against Motherwell, Annan, East Stirlingshire and Stranraer, Rangers made it five from five in style at Ibrox.

Premiership sides Partick Thistle, Hamilton Accies and Inverness Caley Thistle all crashed out of the competition to lower league opposition in the second round.

And boss Warburton was pleased with a job well done from his side as they prepare for the last eight draw tonight.

He said: "You have to be on top of your game and if not, you pay the price. Peterhead have beaten Premiership opposition already and we were aware of that.

“So you also have to make sure your squad is ready for the league campaign as well, so it's important to use these games. We want to win every game we go into.”

It was to prove a satisfying night all round for Warburton as he was able to give several members of his squad some much-needed game time.

Striker Dodoo made the most of his chance to impress as he operated across the Gers’ forward line and capped an encouraging performance with his second goal for Warburton’s side.

Rangers will find out today the extent of Martyn Waghorn’s hamstring injury and Warburton was pleased to see Dodoo shine in the final third.

He said: "We never had any doubts about is quality. We knew what Joe can do, there's a lot of development from him still ahead, but we were never going to bring anyone to the club just to make up the numbers.

“If they add to our value then we will take them, but we are never going to add to our squad just for numbers.”
