Andy Murray and Johanna Konta will have to try again on Thursday after their matches were rained off in Rio.

The start of play at the Olympic Tennis Centre was pushed back several times but rain continued to fall and around 4.30pm local time the day session was abandoned.

Defending champion Murray had been due to face Italy's Fabio Fognini in the third round while Konta will take on second seed Angelique Kerber in the quarter-finals.

Both now face having to play every day if they are to win a medal, while Konta could find herself with a hectic schedule after her mixed doubles opener with Jamie Murray was also postponed.

The weather may have come as something of a blessing to the 10th seed, though, given she had to battle for more than three hours on Wednesday afternoon to see off Svetlana Kuznetsova.

All the women's quarter-finals and the men's third-round matches had been on the schedule for Wednesday along with doubles matches.

But organisers were still hopeful some play would be possible and the evening session matches were not cancelled.

First was due to be the clash between Petra Kvitova and Serena Williams' conqueror Elina Svitolina, to be followed by Gael Monfils taking on Marin Cilic.

Fourth seed Kei Nishikori was also hoping to play his match against Andrej Martin, while Monica Puig and Laura Siegemund were both hoping to be unlikely semi-finalists.
