IAN McMILLAN (The Wee Prime Minister) was a creative midfielder who joined Rangers from Airdrie in 1958. During that time Rangers enjoyed one of the greatest periods in the club’s history, winning 12 major honours, a Treble was clinched and a European final was reached…

FINLAY (Clarkson) – Is it true after the 1963 Scottish Cup Final Replay between Rangers and Celtic, Jim Baxter retained the match ball which he presented to Ian McMillan in the victorious teams dressing room. The reason being that Baxter was quoted to have said to McMillan: “Ian, as this will possibly be your last Cup Final you should have the match ball."

This is correct but not as straightforward as you might imagine.

After Rangers’ 3-0 victory, with goals from Davie Wilson and Ralph Brand (2), Baxter after the match did retain the match ball which he placed underneath his shirt as he walked from the pitch.

The match referee Tiny Wharton was instructed by his pay masters the SFA to retrieve the ball from Baxter which was very reluctantly returned to him by Baxter.

Baxter was very unhappy about the decision and for three weeks after the game phoned the SFA on a daily basis for the ball to be returned to Ian McMillan.

A few weeks later the ball was sent to Ibrox anonymously for the attention of Ian McMillan, the SFA clearly having changed their stance.

WILLIE HOOD (Maryhill) – Details please of a Glasgow Cup semi-final in 1968/69. Celtic did the Treble that season, but Rangers beat them in this match, I think?

The match took place at Celtic Park on April 11, 1969. The final score was Celtic 3 Rangers 4.

The teams lined up:

Celtic: Fallon, Craig, O’Neill, Brogan, Hay, Clark, Wallace, Connelly, Chalmers, Hood and Callaghan.

Rangers: Martin, Johansen, Mathieson, Jardine, Jackson, Smith, Henderson, Penman, Ferguson, Johnston and Persson.

Willie Johnston scored a hat-trick for the Gers with their other goal coming from Alex Ferguson. Harry Hood, Tom Callaghan and Stevie Chalmers were the Celts scorers.

SUSAN P (Via e-mail) – When I was at Glasgow University in the Seventies, I remember the Uni team played Albion Rovers in the Scottish Cup. Can you remind me of the score?

The first game at Cliftonhill in 1975/76 season ended Albion Rovers 1 Glasgow University 1.

Brogan scored for Rovers and Cairns got the Uni goal. The replay at Westerton ended 1-0 to Albion with Franchetti scoring.
