Celtic legend Henrik Larsson has told the Parkhead side to believe as they head into daunting Group C of the UEFA Champions League.

Brendan Rodgers’ side were last out of the hat as they were put up against Barcelona – Larsson’s other former club – Manchester City and Borussia Monchengladbach.

And while it looks like a daunting group on paper, the Swede has told Celtic that anything is possible if they believe in Rodgers and one another.

The Celtic manager has insisted that the Hoops are not there purely to make up the number, a philosophy that Larsson echoed.

“Once you are there you want to win every game,” said Larsson. “Listen, if you get into the Champions League then what you need is belief. You need to believe in the manager and believe in your team mates.

“If you have that then anything is possible. If you do not have that then you are as well not being there at all. You want to go out and show that you can upset the so-called “bigger teams”.

“If you are good enough to be in the Champions League then you are good enough to go and do something in the competition.”

And Larsson has told the current crop of Parkhead players that this is the stage for them to go and make a name for themselves.

There are a number of players in the dressing room who have never played in the Champions League before but the iconic striker has told them to enjoy every minute of it.

“There is a lot at stake,” said Larsson. “But if you are a football player then it is not a question of nerves.Glasgow Times: Celtic legend Henrik Larsson.

“It is not a question of finding it difficult, or feeling the pressure. It is about what you want to achieve for your club and what you want to achieve for yourself and your career.

“This is the Champions League; it is the biggest tournament you can play in. You can only eclipse that by playing in a World Cup or one of the European finals.

“There is pressure, of course there is, but there is always pressure as a football player and that is something that you have to handle very quickly.

“These are important games for the club. It is where you can make your reputation as a player.

“The nights at Celtic Park in the Champions League are special. There is something about the crowd and the atmosphere and also something that could bring out the best in Celtic at times. We had some fabulous nights against some of the very best teams in Europe – and why can they not do that again?

“You have to enjoy that as a player. You have to want that.”

Meanwhile, Patrick Roberts will be allowed to play for Celtic against his parent club. The winger is currently on-loan in Glasgow from Manchester City but he will be allowed to feature for the Hoops, which will be good news for Brendan Rodgers.
