It is no secret that Partick Thistle manager Alan Archibald is looking to strengthen his squad ahead of the transfer window closing in Scotland this evening.

If that doesn't happen though, attacking midfielder Stevie Lawless has urged supporters not to panic, because the Jags already have the strength in depth required to be a force in this season’s Premiership.

Thistle have picked up three points from their three league matches so far this campaign, but Lawless saw enough in their performances against top sides like Aberdeen and Hearts to suggest they are in for a decent season.

“This is the most depth in a squad we’ve had since I’ve been here,” Lawless said.

“There are a lot of options even coming off the bench, and then there are boys not even making the squad who are more than capable.

“Even if the manager doesn’t add players then I’m still confident we will do well, although obviously it would be nice to get one or two more in.

“The likes of Stuart Bannigan and Mustapha Dumbuya were big players for us last year and you’re going to miss them, but the boys who have come in have done really well.

“It’s not been too noticeable that they are missing, and once they are back that will be like two new signings because they’ve been out for so long.

“Maybe that could be the two signings the gaffer is after.

“We were quite unlucky at the end on Saturday with the way their winner came about, and we had chances of our own before that to maybe steal the win, so we know if we keep performing like that we’ll get the points, that’s the main thing.

“It could have been a lot worse coming out of those two games.

“I don’t think it’s a psychological thing against these big teams, I just think they’ve got that extra quality when it comes to taking their chance.

“I thought we deserved better against a hard team to play against. They play an awkward system as well and I thought we managed it quite well.

“They obviously had their moments, but that’s going to happen when you play against top opposition.

“At the time, a lot of our heads were down, but now a couple of days later we can look back on it and try to take the positives which there were a lot of.

“We’d obviously rather have the three points, but we’ve played well against Aberdeen and Hearts now, so there’s no reason why we can’t go into games and try to impose ourselves on every team we play.

“If we play like that then we will get points, because they are obviously two of the harder teams in the league and we felt we could have had points off of both of them.”

While heartened by his side’s performances so far, Lawless – being his own fiercest critic – admits that there is still room for improvement in his own displays.

“It’s started off slow for me, and I didn’t put in the sort of performances that I was after, certainly in the cup,” he said.

“Since then I’ve picked up a little bit, and in the last two games I’ve done pretty well, although I could have done better.

“It’s been an improvement though, even though we didn’t pick up any points. I’d rather play badly and pick up points, but these things happen and I’m sure they will come.”
