Shettleston saw off Wishaw in a Greenfield Park thriller last night to seal their place in this season’s Exsel Group Sectional League Cup final.

Inspirational player/co-boss Peter Weatherson scored twice as the Town ran out 4-2 winners in a pulsating encounter to earn the right to face Rob Roy, who were 2-0 conquerors over Pollok in their semi-final clash at Guys Meadow.

The opening exchanges in the East End of Glasgow were dominated by the visiting Wishaw whose striker George McGeachie’s ability to win head flicks ensured the home side were pegged back in defence. However Shettleston were dangerous on the break and visiting keeper Sandy Thomson received the game’s first yellow card for pulling down home team striker Rikky McIntosh some 30 yards from goal.

Wishaw appeals for a penalty kick when K B Grant appeared to be tugged back by Bob Campbell inside the area came to nothing and Town keeper Grant Hay - limping heavily after being injured in making a full blooded clearance under pressure - was forced into a terrific diving save to keep out a Grant header.

A goal was looking inevitable but as so often happens it came against the run of play at the other end of the pitch in 39 minutes when Campbell delivered a cross that was met by McIntosh who directed a firm header beyond the helpless Thomson.

Wishaw midfielder Paul McGeough passed up a decent equalising opportunity before the break and he and his team-mates were made to pay on the resumption as Town top scorer Weatherson doubled the home team’s advantage.

However, almost immediately the dangerous Grant netted to make it 2-1.

The third goal of a four minute spell duly arrived as a Lloyd Kinnaird effort was deflected in by Wishaw defender Barry Ely and the 70th minute mark saw Weatherson score a terrific solo effort to put Shettleston 4-1 ahead.

Wishaw were not for giving up the fight and Mark Daly responded with a rare goal but there was to be no more scoring and the Lanarkshire outfit succumbed to their third Sectional League Cup semi-final defeat in consecutive seasons.

The other semi-final was a more closely fought contest but Rob Roy edged the opening 45 minutes with a Chris Duff score and they duly added to their lead after the break with a sublime finish by ex-Lok front man Willie Sawyers sealing a 2-0 triumph for Stewart Maxwell’s men.

Ayrshire’s equivalent early season Ardagh Glass Cup competition will be contested by Super Premier Division rivals Auchinleck Talbot and Kilbirnie Ladeside following last night’s semi-final contests.

Talbot prevailed in a tight contest at home to Beith whose hopes of going all the way suffered a major blow when goalkeeper Calum McBain was red carded in the second half and had to be replaced between the sticks by midfielder Tommy Martin.

Superior numbers told when striker Keir Milliken opened the scoring, but Beith battled back with Paul Frize equalising with just two minutes remaining. It looked as though the game was going to penalties, but a dramatic finale saw Auchinleck’s midfield newcomer Dylan Stevenson bag the winning goal and set home supporters celebrating.

Kilbirnie’s passage to the final was every bit as difficult as they overcome Cumnock 2-1.

Mick O’Byrne’s early score for the Blasties was cancelled out by a goal from Nock marksman Scott Anson, but home team midfielder Eddie McTernan decided the outcome with a late score.

LAST NIGHT’S RESULTS: Exsel Group Sectional League Cup semi-finals: Shettleston 4 Wishaw 2, Rob Roy 2 Pollok 0.

Ardagh Glass Cup semi-finals: Kilbirnie Ladeside 2 Cumnock 1, Auchinleck Talbot 2 Beith 1.
