PHILIPPE Senderos can't wait to sample the atmosphere of being a Rangers player on Old Firm derby day - because he still can't believe the noise the club's fans made when he played for AC Milan at Ibrox in a friendly.

The 31-year-old Swiss international central defender, who met the press yesterday for the first time since sealing a deal at the club which will last until the end of the season, was part of a star-studded Milan side which drew 2-2 in Govan in a 2009 friendly.

Kaka and David Beckham also played that night but Senderos will hope to bring some star quality of his own to this Rangers side. After tomorrow's friendly against Linfield in Belfast, it could all start with a baptism of fire at Celtic Park next Saturday lunchtime.

“I’m really looking forward to it," said Senderos, who will lock horns with a former Aston Villa team-mate in the form of Scott Sinclair at Celtic Park next Saturday. "I played at Ibrox in a friendly for AC Milan and I remember the noise. It was crazy and that was only a friendly. The atmosphere was great and playing against Rangers was a highlight for me.

“Every game is different and we know this game is more than football," he added. "It is a special game and the noise will be crazy. I’m expecting a big atmosphere. I have watched some of them. You can see the intensity, hear the noise and you can see what it means to everyone on the pitch and around the city. You can see with every tackle and every pass it means so much to so many people. Which derby is the best? I will find out next week."

While Senderos hasn't played any first-team football since late May, when he featured for Switzerland in a friendly defeat to Belgium, he has been training with the Ibrox club for at least two weeks. While the transfer has been protracted, and dependent on the 11th hour collapse of a move for Joleon Lescott, Senderos said he couldn't care less if he wasn't Mark Warburton's first choice for the job. Clint Hill and Rob Kiernan were widely criticised for their performance in the 1-1 draw at Kilmarnock a week ago.

“I didn’t really think about it [the Lescott situation]," said Senderos. "I tried to focus on my job and whatever is in my hands. I knew they were looking at other people but that was the same as other teams. The manager didn’t speak to me about that, not at all. I don’t get involved in other players or whatever they have been discussing. I was here to train and I came in to do that. They were happy with me and in the end I signed. On my part, this move was never in doubt. I’ve been here for a couple of weeks now and I’ve been enjoying training."
