SCOTTISH boxing legend Jim Watt will be the man of the hour this Sunday in the annual gathering of the nation’s most iconic fighters.

Ahead of this year’s Scottish Ex-Boxers Association award ceremony in Glasgow this Sunday, the Evening Times can reveal the former world champion is to be recognised in the star-studded bash.

The 68-year-old Glaswegian will receive the special award for services and achievements to Scottish boxing and will be handed his gong by former glove rival Ken Buchanan.

“I can’t wait to put one on his chin,” joked Buchanan, who famously went toe-to-toe with Watt back in 1973 to reclaim his British Lightweight title. “It will be a great occasion.”

Watt became a lightweight world champion when he knocked out Alfredo Pitalua to claim Roberto Duran’s vacated title.

The iconic fighter is the star of the show this Sunday at Glasgow’s Iron Horse, but there are plenty of others who will also be recognised.

Andy Whiteford, Len Mullen, Dick Currie and Ray Culfield will all be commended for their services to boxing, Ally McMillan, Michael O’Leary and Currie will also receive lifetime membership awards.

This year’s boxer of the year goes to Glasgow Commonwealth Games boxer Josh Taylor.

Speaking about the event, which kicks off at 2pm, SEBA secretary Hugh Dickson said: “We are once again blessed to be in the company this year of some of Scotland’s boxing greats.

“Alex Morrison will be there and it’s fantastic that once again he is lending his support to the SEBA cause.

“To recognise Jim this year seemed the right thing to do. He is a true champion and I know I speak on behalf of all our members to say he is truly deserving of the award.

“It will also be nice to see him and Ken close up all these years on!”
