MARTYN WAGHORN is confident Rangers are on the right track this term as they look to find their form and end a poor Premiership run.

Mark Warburton’s side dropped another two points in the top flight title race on Saturday as they were held to a goalless draw by Ross County.

The Gers boss was pleased with an improved performance from his side but it wasn’t enough to earn a much-needed win following their Old Firm defeat at Parkhead.

Rangers host Queen of the South this evening as they set their sights on a League Cup semi-final slot and striker Waghorn admits the Light Blues have to up their game to meet the Ibrox expectations.

He said: “We know what we need to do to put it all in place. Saturday was a bit more like us in terms of playing from the front and we created a lot of good chances and overall we played the best we have all season.

“Has it taken longer than usual? Yes, but it’s still a new group and we’re still learning how to play together in the Premiership. It’s going to take time but hopefully we will turn the corner now.

“It’s important you learn from it - we analyse the games win, lose or draw and learn from what we did well. We’ve got to learn from mistakes too.

“We’re in a squad that’s still in transition, still learning, and it’s important we learn from games such as the weekend. We didn’t get the three points, but we can build on it against Queens.

“We experienced it (the criticism) in spells last season, at Christmas and towards the end of the campaign as well. It’s Rangers. We have to deal with it.

“We’re expected to win and the boys know that. Results could have been better but we’re five into the season, there’s a long way to go and we want to build on last week.”

It has been a tough start to the campaign for Rangers as they have shipped nine points from their opening six Premiership fixtures.

The spotlight is shining on Warburton and his players as they attempt to get their season back on track sooner rather than later.

And Waghorn is confident the Light Blues have what it takes to put a consistent run together and ease the pressure in the coming weeks.

He said: “Maybe [it is] a number of things - it’s a new group, new challenge, different level of tournament.

“I just think for us we’ve not been at it in all honesty, parts of games we’ve done very well and started well and fell off or we’ve fallen behind and had to dig in and claw it back.

“We’ve missed a full performance for 90 minutes and ultimately sticking the ball in the back of the net.

“An accumulation of things but on the whole not performing for the 90 minutes has been a big factor.

“To be honest we’ve not noticed it that much in terms of quality. Teams have come to Ibrox with the same approach as last season - sit in, defend, try to hit us on the break.

“I’ve found the intensity maybe the fitness levels are a bit better, being able to press and work hard for the 90 minutes whereas last season with 10-15 minutes to go we could break down teams when fatigue crept in.

“Fitness levels are a bit different but we’ve not seen a difference in terms of quality yet, maybe bits of it against Celtic, but teams are sitting in, especially at Ibrox, and trying to make it difficult for us, frustrate, which is the same pattern as last year.”
