DEREK MCINNES insists Aberdeen won’t get carried away by their last-gasp victory over Rangers as they moved up to second spot in the Premiership standings.

The Dons piled more pressure on Gers boss Mark Warburton as goals from Jonny Hayes and James Maddison clinched a dramatic win at Pittodrie.

Andy Halliday had pulled the visitors level from the spot but a stunning free-kick from Maddison earned McInnes’ side all three points.

Aberdeen have been Celtic’s closest challengers in the last two seasons and are four points adrift of the Hoops are seven games.

And boss McInnes is determined to kick-on from an afternoon to savour for the Pittodrie crowd as they earned bragging rights over their old rivals.

He said: “Rangers made the pitch big as they always do.

“They test your organisation by moving the ball quickly. They have loads of good players.

“But although there were loads of good players on show with a minute to go wee Maddison is the one who finds the quality to get the win.

“From my perspective bringing Wes Burns on – and having that option to give their centre halves something else to think about in the last 15 minutes – was telling.

“We’ve not always been able to do that. My subs played a part in the game and that’s been clear in our last three games.

“It’s only three points. But it’s good to beat a team of Rangers’ quality. It’s a good day for our football club.

“The club was at its best, full house, fans right up for the game. If we could generate that every week I’d take that because the supporters enjoyed that and they should enjoy beating a team like Rangers.

“But it’s the same three points next week at Kilmarnock so we won’t get carried away.

“It’s been a good week, though. This was going to be our toughest challenge but we’ve overcome it. Even though Rangers had a lot of possession I thought we were the team that carried most threat at getting to goal.

“It takes different ways to win a game. But if wee James isn’t on the pitch maybe it ends 1-1 and we’re bemoaning that we only played for 45 minutes.”
