Partick Thistle’s Chris Erskine, with five goals to his name already this season, has wasted no time in rediscovering his killer instinct since returning to the club.

Unfortunately, Ade Azeez has not been able to display the same composure when chances have fallen his way so far in his short Jags career, with the striker still searching for his first league goal.

Despite causing plenty of problems for the Motherwell defence on Saturday and getting himself into potential goalscoring positions, Azeez fluffed his lines three times as he bore in on ‘Well keeper Craig Samson.

Erksine says though that it’s only a matter of time before the powerful frontman gets among the goals.

“I think everyone can see how well he has done, especially at the weekend where he had a great game, albeit he missed a few chances through on goal,” Erskine said.

“Because he is a striker people will talk about that and how he hasn’t scored a goal, but I see him in training every day and I’m sure that once he gets one in the league he’ll be off and running.

“He does so well for the team as well and creates problems for defences, he’s doing everything right apart from putting the ball in the net, so I’m sure that through time that will come and once he gets one then he’ll go on a run.”

Azeez’s fortunes have mirrored those of his team as a whole, with good performances not being rewarded with goals and wins.

Erskine though is similarly sure that Thistle can turn things around if they can be more clinical in front of goal.

“That’s been the theme of the last few weeks, particularly against Kilmarnock and Motherwell,” he said.

“We felt as if we played well enough to win both games, especially on Saturday where we created a lot of chances and could have been out of sight before Motherwell got back into it.

“We can take the positives from the games though in that we are playing well and creating chances, and I’m sure that will result in a few wins before long.”

A trip to Ibrox to face Rangers may not have historically been a fixture that teams struggling at the foot of the table would relish, but Thistle will make the short journey to Govan in good heart.

Erskine says that morale has not been dented in the Firhill dressing room by their poor run of results, and while he knows it will be a tough task, he believes that the Jags can kick-start their season by defeating Mark Warburton’s men.

“It’s going to be hard for us, we know that, especially with Rangers being at home and the support that they have,” he said.

“They play attacking football so they will probably have their chances, so it’s important that we take any chances that come our way, because we might be limited to a few opportunities.

“Just because they’ve not started too well it’s still early days, and they’ve got good quality in their squad. We know it will be a tough place to go.

“I personally feel though that if we’re playing well then we don’t have to fear anybody. We have enough in our squad to cause problems for anyone, the main thing is that we take our chances and hopefully we can do that on Saturday.

“We need to kick-start our season, we’ve been playing well but we need to kick off a run of wins.

“If we can get a win on Saturday we then have a couple of home games, so it would be a good time to get three points.

"Nobody is down in the dressing room. If we were getting these results and not playing well then we might be looking around and wondering whether we had enough in the dressing room.

“We definitely have though, and with the football we play and the chances we create then it’s only a matter of time before it all clicks together.”
