It cannot be easy if you’re a Beith supporter nowadays to focus on the bread and butter business of collecting league points.

The magnificent cup exploits of John Sheridan & Co have seen to that given the excitement generated in the north Ayrshire town by last night’s William Hill Scottish Cup second round draw.

And it saw The Mighty paired with Glasgow BSC for a West of Scotland showdown away on October 22.

The game is a fitting reward following Beith’s 6-0 weekend thrashing of first round opponents Strathspey Thistle through goals from Kenny McLean (2), Darren Christie, Ross McPherson, David McGowan and Nikky Docherty.

This latest triumph preceded SJFA officials announcing their intention to hold the second round draw for this season’s Scottish Junior Cup at Bellsdale Park immediately after the final whistle sounds on Saturday to conclude the Super Premier Division contest between Beith and Pollok.

And it has to go down as stage management at its best to have the 2016/17 second round pairings – all 64 of them – ceremoniously pulled from the hat with the cup holders and beaten finalists from last time out looking on with bated breath.

Beith defensive cornerstone Kevin McDonald accepts it’s a huge honour for his club but is adamant that the priorities of him and his team-mates lie elsewhere.

Kev said: "Everyone connected with Beith Juniors is looking forward to the cup draw as you might expect, however our dressing room considers the main event on Saturday to be our game against Pollok.

“It’s not a case of us being disrespectful as much as we as a group of players believing we have it in us to mount a title challenge this season and right now there’s a crying need for us to get points on the board.

“Having played just one league game up to now means we’ve already slipped behind most other teams so we need to be making up ground but that is anything but straightforward against the likes of Pollok.

“Tony McInally has supplemented a playing squad that was already packed with quality and no doubt the Pollok players will be coming here intent on furthering their own title ambitions as well as having a point to prove after our Scottish Cup win.

“The two teams played out a tame 1-1 draw down here in a meaningless league match nearing the end of last season, but I fancy there will be more of an edge to this weekend’s head to head.”

The experienced defender reckons Beith racking up a comprehensive victory over Highland League outfit Strathspey without influential duo Mark McLaughlin and Jamie Wilson may pose something of a selection problem for gaffer Johnny Millar.

He said: "The Strathspey game was all about getting through to the next round and we did that with a bit to spare thanks to serving up a decent performance, which saw us create a lot of goalscoring chances.

“They were something of an unknown quantity so it was slightly concerning beforehand to be going up against them minus big Mark and Jamie who have been key figures in our winning run of games.

“”Mark was laid up due to a knock picked up in our defeat of Auchinleck while Jamie was on a short holiday break however it’s an indication of our playing squad’s strength in depth that they weren’t missed.

“The gaffer reshuffled his pack to bring Richie Burke and Calum Watt in from the cold and they were both outstanding so the dilemma now is whether to change things again for facing Pollok.

Visiting boss McInally, who can call upon midfield playmaker Colin Williamson after he appealed his recent red carding against Hurlford United, is holding back from revealing his selection hand because of a couple of player doubts.

He said:"We trained on Saturday morning and again last night, however both Derek Hepburn and Alan McKenzie sat out the sessions because of injuries so we’ll wait and see if the rest has helped their recovery.

“Hopefully they can pull through because we might well need all the options available to us if we are to take anything away from Beith other than the name of our next up Scottish Cup opponents.”

Asked if he had any preferences when the draw is made brought the seasoned Lok boss to remark

“The lowest ranked Junior club left in the competition would do me just fine - and I’d like a home tie into the bargain.”
