RANGERS have had many great European victories over the years, none more so than when beating Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven 3-2 in the Philips Stadium in 1978…

J WILSON (Mount Vernon) – Could you give the goalscorers in Rangers’ famous European Cup victory over PSV Eindhoven in 1978.

With the first leg finishing 0-0 at Ibrox, Rangers had it all to do in the second leg against one of the favourites to lift the European Cup.

PSV Eindhoven had won the Uefa Cup the previous season and had never lost a European match on their own ground.

The Netherlands squad, which came so close to winning the World Cup in Argentina, contained six PSV players.

Rangers’ goalscoring heroes in their dramatic victory were Alex MacDonald, Derek Johnstone and Bobby Russell.

Scorers for PSV were Harry Lubse and Gerrie Deijkers.

Rangers lost 2-1 on aggregate against Cologne in the quarter-final.

WALTER (Kilsyth) – The sad passing of Alan Cousin has revived memories of Dundee's League Championship win in season 1961/62. I remember as a youngster being at Ibrox for Rangers' last game of the season, and the crowd being anxious waiting on the half-time results being displayed, as they were then. What was the situation going into the final matches and was there a swing in fortunes during the games?

Dundee went into their final game two points ahead of Rangers, who had a superior goal average.

Remembering it was only two points for a win at the time, Dundee just required to draw, while Rangers required to win if they failed to achieve this.

Away to St Johnstone a 3-0 victory secured the title for Dundee, while Kilmarnock held Rangers to a 1-1 draw at the game you attended.

There was no swing in fortunes as press reports of the games show Gilzean scored twice in the 34th and 59th minutes and Penman added the third on the 66th, at the same time Kilmarnock went in front through Kerr, Wilson's equaliser for Rangers coming on the 83rd minute.

Dundee team for the match was Liney, Hamilton, Cox, Seith, Ure, Wishart, Smith, Penman, Cousin, Gilzean, and Robertson.

LIZ (Merrylee) – I was delighted to see that the Scotland’s Women’s team have qualified for the Euro 2017 Finals tournament. I know they were unlucky in previous attempts to get to Finals. Can you give me details?

They qualified as the best runners-up team in the qualifications with 21 points from their eight games. They beat Iceland 2-1 on Wednesday, September 21, thanks to a Jane Ross double.

Iceland also reached 21 points but they had a better head-to-head so they went through as group winners. That win for Scotland on Wednesday is exactly 35 years to the day that the two countries met at Dumbarton in Iceland’s first-ever international. Scotland won that match 3-2.

Scotland’s qualification for the Euro 2017 finals was made even more sweet after the heartache of previous play-offs against Spain and the Netherlands.
