Craig Gordon was back between the sticks on Wednesday night because of an injury to Dorus De Vries and it is interesting now to see what happens next.

Certainly, if the keeper can seize his chance then it might be that he makes his own case for staying in.

No matter what anyone’s opinion is on the matter it comes down to who the manager wants to put in.

However, what I do think is that you cannot chop and change a goalkeeper every other week. You need a settled and consistent keeper as well as a back four who are also pretty steady in order that you establish a strong relationship between them.

What we have seen, though, this season is competition for almost every place in the team. You have Gordon and de Vries vying for the gloves, while at the other end of the park you have Moussa Dembele and Leigh Griffiths looking for goals.

On the flank, James Forrest has begun to turn into the type of player that we all thought he had the potential to be but which we never quite seen. He has had an extraordinary start to the season but between Forrest and Patrick Roberts, you have considerable options.

What that means is that you can play one guy for an hour and know that you are putting on a replacement for him who is every bit as good for the remaining 30 minutes of a game. There really are genuine options all over the park.

I do think that Kolo Toure will probably be rested for a fair few games but in Jozo Simunovic and Erik Sviatchenko there is another partnership there too.

Given how well the team are playing and how much of a lift there has been over the past few months you also have the situation where everyone wants to play. The competition for places can definitely inspire the best in players and it will be interesting to see who establishes themselves firmly in the starting XI over the coming weeks.
