HARRY FORRESTER admits Rangers will have to be more clinical in the final third if they are to continue climbing the Premiership standings in the coming weeks.

Mark Warburton’s side moved up to fifth spot as they got back to winning ways with a 2-0 triumph over Partick Thistle on Saturday.

It has been a mixed start to the campaign for the Light Blues as they have turned in some solid showings but been left with nothing to show for their efforts.

Defeats to Celtic and Aberdeen piled the pressure on Warburton and his players and the Gers find themselves seven points off the Premiership pace.

But Forrester is confident Rangers can continue moving in the right direction after Niko Kranjcar and Andy Halliday hit the target against the Jags.

He said: “It is a winning industry and we know that. In recent weeks, we have been better and we have played a lot better.

“It was a sickening blow at Aberdeen and it seems to be that is the way things are going at the moment. It wasn’t a foul and then the boy puts it in from 30 yards.

“It wasn’t the best performance [against Thistle] but the main thing was to get the three points and get a bit of confidence back.

“We were dominating games. There have been good displays defensively of late but we are putting pressure on the defence by not converting the chances that we are making.

“We are making a lot of chances. Niko’s goal calmed everybody down, Andy had a great finish and that is what the gaffer has been calling out for.

“We have to take that bit of care in the final third because that is the hardest part of the game but where you win and lose football matches.”

Rangers ensured they went into the international break on the back of a timely Premiership boost as they secured derby victory over Thistle.

After also dropping points against Hamilton, Kilmarnock and Ross County in the opening weeks of the campaign, it was a welcome outcome for boss Warburton.

A trip to Inverness is next on the agenda a week on Friday before attentions will turn to the Betfred Cup and the second Old Firm showdown of the season.

It has not been the start to the campaign the Ibrox crowd were hoping for but midfielder Forrester is confident the Gers squad have what it takes to compete in the top flight.

“We know what we have got inside and that is the frustrating thing,” he told RangersTV.

“We all know what we have got, we work hard day in day out every single one of us.

“To not be getting your rewards on Saturday, then you get pressure, you get comments here, there and everywhere. We are trying.

“To get the rewards on Saturday was a relief and we have got to go again against Inverness.

“The level has increased and the opposition are better players. We are still controlling football games, though. We still go out and are the dominant team, we are still the team looking to create, looking to score.

“It is similar to last year in terms of people coming to Ibrox and playing on the counter more often than not. We have got to be that bit more clinical in front of goal because the chances are not as much as they were last year.

“Last year we were creating loads and loads of chances and putting four, five away regularly.

“This year, you only get five or six changes and you have got to make them count.”
