Celtic and Rangers square up again towards the end of the month in the Betfred League Cup semi-final and Jonathan Gould has special memories of getting one over the Ibrox team at Hampden.

Having spent five years at Celtic, Gould had his fair share of highlights against Rangers, but one of the standouts came at the national stadium.

“Like Craig, I had been the number one and was then out of the team when big Rab Douglas came,” he said. “But he was cup-tied and couldn’t play in the game against Rangers, a semi-final in the old CIS Insurance Cup.

“We were all standing in the tunnel getting ready to go out and Martin [O’Neill] walks quietly along the line. ‘Get Gouldy an early touch, lads,” he said. “He’s a bit rusty.” I just remembering thinking, ‘aye, thank, Martin.’”

“But I hadn’t played for two or three months. We won what was a pretty bad-tempered game 3-1. Jorg Albertz scored a penalty against me, I remember that much.

“That one was sweet for me because it was such a big season for us. We would go on to win the League Cup that season – the first one on the way to the Treble and it was nice to play a little part in that given how difficult the season before had been.

“The only other game that came close to being as big for me was the 6-2 game.

“These games are massive because there is so much at stake between the clubs. They are hellish games to lose but to win and win well, well, you’re walking on air for a wee while.”
