SCOTLAND manager Gordon Strachan’s position is under public scrutiny after a woeful international break saw his side draw at home to Lithuania before being comfortably beaten away in Slovakia.

The former Celtic boss insisted after Tuesday night’s humbling in Trnava that second place in the qualifying group was still possible, but the pressure is building on Strachan after an abject start to the campaign in which his team selection has been criticised.

An opening day 5-1 win against Malta got things off to a good start in September, but the Lithuania and Slovakia results now leave the Scots in fourth place in Group F with a trip to face top seeds England at Wembley up next on November 11.

Bookmakers McBookie and Bet Victor currently have former Norwich, Aston Villa and Blackburn Rovers boss Paul Lambert as the favourite to succeed Strachan if he leaves the post, with odds of 3/1 available.

Aberdeen’s Derek McInnes follows narrowly behind at 4/1, while the likes of David Moyes, Alan Irvine, Joe Jordan and Steve Clarke are also in contention.

Retired Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson is perhaps surprisingly down as the joint-eighth favourite for the job at 16/1.
