CELTIC face Rangers in the Betfred Cup semi-final a week on Sunday at Hampden and the Light Blue legions will want to forget a certain Old Firm League Cup Final in 1957 when the Parkhead men triumphed 7-1…

DECLAN M (Via email) – In season 1957-58 when Celtic won the League Cup did they go through the tournament undefeated.

They reached the final winning nine games from 10. In the six section games they won five and lost one scoring 18 goals.

They then met Third Lanark home and away winning 6-1 and 3-0 in the quarter-finals.

Next came Clyde in the semis and Celtic won 4-2 and in the final they beat Rangers 7-1.

In total they had scored 38 goals in 10 games to win the League Cup.

JOHN K (Via email) – I seem to remember that in the pre-season of 1981-82 (I think!) Celtic and Rangers both won games by the score of 10-0 on the same day. These matches were on the continent, probably against weak opposition. Can you give details?

I think the day you are looking for is Saturday, July 25, 1981.

Celtic defeated German Amateur side SV Wesseling, the goalscorers were McCluskey (2), Doyle (2), Provan, Sullivan, Conroy, Burns (2) and Nicholas.

Rangers hammered Swedish team Carlshamn, with goals by Johnstone (2), MacDonald (2), Russell (2), Redford, Johnston, Cooper and McAdam.

DANNY (Erskine) – Have Dundee United previously been relegated from the top tier since the introduction of the Premier League?

The inaugural season of the Premier League in Scotland was 1994/95 and Dundee United had the inauspicious honour of being the first team to be relegated from it.

Aberdeen narrowly missed joining them, having to survive a play-off with Dunfermline.

United regained Premier League status the following season but only after a dramatic extra-time play-off against Partick Thistle.

E.S. Blofeld – I am told there was a player called James Bond who played for Queen of the South in the late 1950s. Is this correct?

Absolutely correct.

James E. Bond made one appearance for “The Doonhamers” in season 1958/59 and scored one goal.

Previous clubs had included Carlisle United, Manchester United and Preston North End.

Can't tell you much about his subsequent career as the rest of the file is marked “Top Secret”.

Incidentally, the middle initial “E” stood for E.R.N.I.E.

Strange, but true.
