Celtic are on the precipice of what is a momentous week for them – and I have to say that the game against Borussia Monchengladbach on Wednesday night is arguably the biggest game in the group for Brendan Rodgers’ side.

And I do think that there is a tendency to look at Barcelona and Manchester City and assume that the Bundesliga side don’t pack quite the same punch; I can promise you that they will provide every bit a stern a test as Man City did at Celtic Park.

These next two games against the Germans will effectively decide whether or not Celtic secure European football after Christmas. You never know what can happen in football it is a game that has the capacity to surprise, but realistically I think we would all look at the group and expect Celtic to be fighting for that third spot that would secure them Europa League football after Christmas.

A draw wouldn’t be a disaster but I do think that in a tournament like this you need to be looking to win your home games.

And whoever tends to come out on top points wise from this double header is who you would expect to grab that third berth. Celtic will still have a home game to come against Barcelona after this week’s game against Borussia but you would really pinpoint these two games as where they can establish their position within the group.

The only thing I would say is that if Celtic can play with the same commitment and passion that they did against Man City a few weeks back then a victory will be within their grasp.

And the good thing for Rodgers is that, injuries aside, he essentially now has a team that picks itself while also having good cover in just about every position.

I think we can all assume that it will be Moussa Dembele who continues to lead the line, particularly in the Champions League. The lad is back at Celtic with a real spring in his step after shining for France’s under-20 side when he was on international duty last week.

So he will look to pick up where he left off, although I also think that Leigh Griffiths, who we all know was overlooked for a starting jersey against both Lithuania and then Slovakia, is still not short on confidence.

Griffiths, to his credit, has not let his head go down as events have really overtaken him and he has looked sharp and confident whenever he has then come into the fray again.

I do think that is the right attitude to have and I am sure that he will be among the goals at Celtic as this season progresses.

And, having the gloves now, I would suspect that Craig Gordon gets to keep them for now.

But in terms of getting everyone back from international duty, the first objective is to establish who has any knocks and if the likes of Mikael Lustig, who seemed to pick up an injury with Sweden, is struggling then I am sure they will be rested with Wednesday in mind.

Tomorrow normal service and resumed and Celtic will go into the game against Motherwell at Celtic Park looking to maintain the exceptional home form that has been the hallmark of these opening months of the campaign.

Having already shipped five to Celtic in the Betfred League Cup earlier this season, Motherwell will be well aware just how potent Rodgers’ men can be on home turf.

But from Celtic’s point of view it is simply a case of looking to hang onto the grip they have of the league campaign while getting ready got the game against Borussia Monchengladbach on Wednesday night.

I don’t think that there is a tendency to rest players since Rodgers looks to have a relatively consistent selection, but one of the ones that I do wonder about is Kolo Toure.

His experience is massive for Celtic in the Champions League games and it might just be that he is given a breather in the league games in order to be fully fresh.

Certainly, though, for Celtic it is a huge week with Motherwell and then the Champions League before, of course, the semi-final of the League Cup at Hampden against Rangers.

Prior to the international break kicking in, they had established a good bit of momentum so it is just a case of keeping that going now. As players, a busy calendar with big games coming one after the other is exactly what you want.

It is the kind of week that has everybody wanting to play and be involved.
