As someone who works a lot in Germany with BT Sport and with the Bundesliga Broadcasting service, it is fair to say that I have seen a lot of Borussia Monchengladbach, especially over the last year or so.

Like Celtic, they are in the position going into this double header – which I don’t think is unfair to almost see it as a Europa league play-off tie – where they will be looking to take the four points out of six that would effectively see them maintain European football after Christmas.

However, although I think they would be content with a draw in Glasgow tonight, they are a team who are pretty attack-minded so it would be safe to assume that what we will see will be a relatively open game.

If I was to bet on it, I would suggest that there would be a few goals.

Yet, I think the danger on the part of the Celtic supporters is that they look at the previous game against Manchester City, the point that the Parkhead side took from the Premier League side and the manner in which they played, and then assume that they will take all three against Borussia Monchengladbach.

It really won’t be quite as straightforward as that.

They are an exceptionally good side, they play with pace, they press and they are aggressive – but if there is any hope for Celtic it will come in the one or two defensive chinks that are there. Borussia will also be hindered by the absence of Andreas Christensen, the on-loan Chelsea defender who has earned pretty top marks so far this season.

He is injured and while much has been made of the fact that Brazilian forward Raffael is out, I actually think that Christensen is a bigger miss.

He is their best ball playing defender and although Jannik Vestergaard, his Danish compatriot, is an absolute giant of a defender and will have to be the lynchpin of the Borussia defence tonight, he is very good in the air but he just isn’t quite as good with the ball as Christensen is.

So that might open up one or two holes for Celtic to try and exploit.

I know that a few people have looked at the Bundesliga and written off Borussia since they are currently mid-table but I would caution against that. Excusing the fact that it is early days, you also have to realise that they are effectively playing against Champions League standard teams every other week.

Perhaps not to the standard of Barcelona and Manchester City but certainly to Celtic standard – and then some.

Their home record, although they drew 0-0 and missed two penalties against Hamburg at the weekend, is exemplary although they do not travel quite so well.

They lost 4-0 to Schalke a few weeks ago but what I would say is that AT half-time they tried to change things and go more on the attack because they really are an offensive minded team and they ended up losing the game very heavily.

But Andre Schubert is a coach that I have a lot of respect for. He took over Borussia when they were all the way at the wrong end of the table in 18th spot and got them up to fourth last season.

He is a young-ish manager, mid-40s, but he really did transform Borussia. They are a good side, an able team and Celtic, who will also be looking to take four points from six from these two games, will need to be at their best to win the game tonight.
