THE eagerly-awaited Old Firm Betfred Cup semi-final takes place on Sunday and the Ibrox followers will be hoping for a similar result to when the clubs met in the League Cup Final in 2003…

CRAIG (Hurlford) Can you tell me who the four semi-finalists were in the 2002-03 League Cup, and who won the trophy ?

The four semi-finalists were Hearts, Rangers, Celtic and Dundee Utd. Rangers beat Hearts 1-0 in one semi, while Celtic beat Dundee Utd 3-0 in the other.

In the final at Hampden Park on March 16, 2003, Rangers won the match 2-1 with goals from Caniggia and Lovenkrands. Henrik Larsson got Celtic’s goal.

STEVE PORTEOUS (West End) – With Celtic having played Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Champions League last night, am I right in thinking that they once faced Dundee United in the 1980s?

United were in fact drawn against Borussia Mönchengladbach on two occasions in the 1980s, both in the UEFA Cup, and both with great success.

Having disposed of French giants Monaco in the first round, United met Mönchengladbach for the first time in the second round of the 1981-82 competition.

Despite being soundly defeated by two goals to nil in the first leg in Germany, United would go through thanks to one of the finest displays in their history, in which Die Fohlen (featuring a young Lothar Matthäus) were given a 5-0 thrashing through goals from Ralph Milne, Billy Kirkwood, Paul Sturrock, Paul Hegarty and Eamonn Bannon.

The two sides would meet again in the semi-final of the 1986-87 tournament. Following a disappointing 0-0 draw at Tannadice, the Tangerines delivered a performance as epic as that which had seen them defeat Barcelona 2-1 at the Camp Nou in the previous round, as they became the first foreign side to win a European tie at the Bökelbergstadion.

An Iain Ferguson header on half-time, and a cool finish from Ian Redford on full- time, ensured the 2-0 victory and a place in the final for Jim McLean’s men. United would heartbreakingly lose the final to IFK Göteborg, who had ironically also won the 1981-82 trophy.

TAM (Partick) Discussing the sad passing away of David Herd, my mate claimed David once played alongside his father in a league match, can you confirm his claim, and was this a first?

David's father Alec Herd was player manager of Stockport County, then in the Football League Third Division North, and on May 5, 1951, for the final league match of season against Hartlepool United he selected 17-year-old David to play alongside him.

Stockport won 2-0 with David scoring the opening goal. While some records claim this to be a first in a competitive professional senior match, others suggest father and son Jack and William Butler turned out for Grimsby Town in season 1916/17, but this was when English Leagues and FA Cup were suspended during WW1 and competitions were regarded as unofficial.
