Kilwinning Rangers boss Chris Strain is not in the slightest displeased at giving himself a selection headache going into this week’s Scottish Junior Cup second round replay against Arthurlie.

Hardly surprising given his dilemma is all his own doing after swooping last Friday to capture transfer-listed Pollok pair Finlay Frye and Carlo Monti.

And he reckons they will be better equipped for key roles through at Dunterlie after cramming in a full week’s training alongside their new team mates.

And further food for thought has now come from one-time Morton signing Jordan Cairney declaring himself available after sitting out the 0-0 Abbey Park stalemate through work commitments.

The onus is firmly on Strain to select the right playing deck and get the best out of his playing charges, however it’s a challenge he openly relishes.

The Buffs gaffer said: “It goes without saying that we want to win this cup tie.

"However, having Finlay and Carlo at our beck and call is a bonus as they were not specifically signed with this game in mind.

“Truth is we have been actively seeking to strengthen our quad for some considerable time only to be prevented by a mix of circumstances and what I believe is a dearth of the right type of players..

“That all changed with Carlo and Finlay becoming available and the fact they ticked a lot of boxes saw us enter into negotiations with Pollok which were initially protracted and only concluded last Friday.

“The hope is their coming on board will send out a message of intent about this club’s ambitions to not only hold onto our place in the top flight of Junior football but to up there challenging for the title itself..

“Kilwinning Rangers endured a number of years in the lower leagues and we want to do more than just make up the numbers now we are back among the big boys.”

Meanwhile, word on the grapevine has the Ayrshire club’s Scottish Cup first round opponents St Roch's paying a heavy price for the crowd trouble that erupted towards the end of Kilwinning’s 1-0 triumph.

SJFA chiefs have reputedly ordained the James McGrory Stadium pavilion area a no-go zone for 30 minutes before, during and after matches for everyone apart from players, committee men and match officials.

The ban is set to hit the Garngad club in the pocket as the newly-restored pavilion area is used as a focal point to entertain club and match sponsors as well as housing a shop and public bar which provide much-needed income streams.

Nobody from St Roch's was available for comment on their punishment.

However, it’s believed a meeting of club members is set to be convened at which a decision will be made whether to lodge an appeal against the verdict.

Inspirational midfielder John Sweeney’s red-carding in that game has resulted in a three game suspension after being found guilty of an alleged headbutting offence against Buffs centre-back Isaac Farrell and he is set to miss this weekend’s Central First Division clash at home to Lesmahagow along with the similarly suspended Jordan Logan.

And yet another blow on the Candy Rock playing front sees former Clyde stopper Brian McQueen facing the likelihood of sitting out the rest of this season.

It comes after the 25-year-old’s long standing knee injury flared up again.

Someone who knows all about career-threatening knee injuries is former Ashfield and Irvine Meadow striker Paul Maxwell.

And he might be lost to the Junior game for the foreseeable future after taking up the post of Possil Y.M player/manager.

Maxi had been on the radar of a number of Junior clubs ever since quitting Meadow Park during the close season and was inundated with calls from team managers wanting to know his intentions.

However, his opting to take time away from the game to consider his options led to close friend Kevin McDonald asking him to help out with the successful Possil side .

Maxi, 32, revealed: "Initially I just looked after the training side of things but Kevin has always wanted to focus purely on playing and his decision to step away from the manager’s role led to club officials asking me to take charge

“I’d be lying to say it’s not been an enjoyable experience and we have a League Cup semi-final against Harestanes this coming Friday night at Dalziel Park, which will be my biggest game to date .

“My appetite has certainly been whetted for having a crack at coaching and management and maybe even at Junior level one day but my focus for the time being is on giving my all to Possil Y.M .”
