SCOTLAND play England at Wembley on November 11, but there won’t be as many Old Firm players in the starting line-up as there was in the team that faced the Auld Enemy at Hampden in 1968…

GRANT (Gourock) – Can you tell me how many Old Firm players were in the Scotland team that played England at Hampden Park in 1968?

On February 24, 1968, 134,000 saw eight Old Firm players in the Scotland line-up against England.

They were Simpson, Gemmell, McNeill, Hughes and Lennox all of Celtic with Greig, McKinnon and Johnston from Rangers.

The game ended 1-1 with goals from Hughes (Scotland) and Peters (England).

The England team included seven World Cup winners from 1966. They were Banks, Wilson, Moore, Ball, Hurst, Charlton and Peters.

COWSHED CHRIS (Greenock) – With Aberdeen beating Morton 2-0 in the Betfred Cup semi-final last weekend, could you give details of the last time these clubs met each other at the semi-final stage of a major tournament?

The last time Morton played Aberdeen in a major semi-final was in December 1979 in the Scottish League Cup semi-final at Hampden.

Aberdeen won the match 2-1 against a Morton side who actually led the Premier League at the time.

Aberdeen led 2-0 at half-time with goals from Mark McGhee and Gordon Strachan with a hotly-disputed penalty.

The second half belonged to Morton with Andy Ritchie almost breaking the crossbar from 20 yards and Neil Orr having another 20-yarder chalked off by referee Waddell, offside being given against a Morton player standing out on the touchline, not interfering with play.

Ritchie made it 2-1 from the penalty spot late in the second half, but Aberdeen held out, only to lose to Dundee United in the final after a replay.

BOB (Cathkin) – My mate says that a Spanish club won a European trophy and they beat three Scottish clubs on the way to their triumph. Is he right?

Yes he is. Valencia won the Fairs Cities Cup in June 1963. In the first round they beat Celtic 6-4 on aggregate.

In the next round they knocked out Dunfermline in a play off in Lisbon after the two clubs were level at 6-6 after the two legs.

They then faced Hibernian in the quarter-finals and eased their way into the semi-finals with a 6-2 aggregate win.

The Spaniards won the final 4-1 against Dinamo Zagreb.
