MARK WARBURTON insists he retains the backing of 95% of Rangers supporters despite his side being booed off at Ibrox on Wednesday night.

The Gers were held to a 1-1 draw by St Johnstone as they missed the chance to move level with Aberdeen in the standings and fell nine points adrift of Old Firm rivals Celtic.

It has been a lacklustre start to the season for Warburton’s side and the spotlight is on the 54-year-old following a series of poor showings and two derby defeats.

Rangers came under fire from the stands at the final whistle on Wednesday night and head into their weekend clash with Kilmarnock in desperate need of a fifth league win this term.

And boss Warburton believes the pressure on his side is coming from outwith the club and not from the Light Blue legions as he continues to strive for improvement at Ibrox.

He said: “Do you want an honest answer? The pressure comes from certain papers.

“If you read certain papers then you think the pressure comes from the board because we have won four out of ten.

“Had we won [on Wednesday] night instead of drawn, where would be in relation to Hearts and Aberdeen?

“The point is this, we are ten games in, very early into the season, still players gelling in.

“And from this 'shocking' start... One reporter said to me [on Wednesday] night that it would be even deeper into the despair.

“What the... are you talking about? Because if we [had won on Wednesday] we are level second having had this 'shocking' start.

“I think there is a lot of nonsense written. We have spoken to enough genuine Rangers supporters that we are not listening to the 5% minority, we are not listening to them at all.

“The feedback we get is positive. They understand that we are trying to play.

“[On Wednesday night the] second half wasn't good enough. Why did I say that the boos were understandable? Because it wasn't a good second half.

“You pay your money to be entertained and I wasn't entertained in that second half.

“I didn't enjoy watching my team in the second half, so I understand the boos, absolutely.

“But I know the vast majority of Rangers fans have been first class, they have been fantastic.

“There have been some rogue comments in papers, or radio phone-ins, whatever it may be.

“But if the board come and speak to me that is a different proposition.

“Right now, we are right in the mix, if we win our next two games and are second going into the international break, is that bad for a team which has just come up?

“Then you are back into the expectation that you mentioned earlier. Is it bad if we are sitting second after a 'shocking' start. I am not so sure.”
