CELTIC captain Scott Brown is set to come out of international retirement and be named in the Scotland squad for next month's World Cup qualifier against England.

The Hoops skipper stepped down from Scotland duty in the summer after winning 50 caps for his country, but could overturn his decision in time for the meeting with the Auld Enemy at Wembley on November 11.

BBC Scotland reported on Friday that Brown is likely to be named in manager Gordon Strachan's squad for the game after the pair held talks on Thursday.

Brown's return is understood to not be on a one-off basis, as the 31-year-old wants to play his part in helping the national side turn around their qualifying campaign after a poor start.

Strachan's side followed up an opening day win in Malta with a home draw against Lithuania and a 3-0 defeat away to Slovakia, leaving them in fourth place after three games.

Scotland assistant Mark McGhee appeared to confirm the Bhoys captain's comeback in a Motherwell press conference on Friday.

Asked if Brown's return would be the boost the team are looking for, McGhee said: "I think it is. It certainly is for me. When Gordon told me, I felt it was a big positive. I was delighted.

"I would imagine that when England look at our team, they would prefer Scott Brown not to be playing.

"We have a better chance of getting a result with 'Broony' than without him."

Brown has been in superb form for Celtic under the tutelage of manager Brendan Rodgers this season, scoring twice in 20 games to help the Bhoys into the Champions League group stages, to the top of the Premiership table and into the League Cup final.
