WILLIE Sawyers insists he is not feeling under any pressure for Rob Roy failing to find the net in suffering a 1-0 defeat by Troon last weekend.

Their surprise Portland Park reverse brought an end to a run of 14 games without defeat by the table-topping Rabs and it was the first league game in which Willie Sawyers & Co had fired blanks this season.

The top scoring hitman – 12 goals in 14 games to date – has designs on getting back on the goal trail tomorrow when he and his Kirkintilloch team mates play  host to Beith who now boast the only unbeaten record in the
Super Premier Division.

“We played really well down at Troon and created  a number of goalscoring chances but it was one of those days when we did everything but put the ball in the net. But we didn’t come away thinking our bubble had burst.

“It was probably the complete opposite with everyone looking forward to making amends in our next game which turns out to be Beith who on current form are arguably the toughest opponents we could have faced.”

Rob Roy warmed up for the Guys Meadow clash with Kevin Watt, Shaun Fraser and Jordan McGuire on target in a 3-0 midweek friendly win over a Central Scottish  Amateur Select  in a game arranged by team boss Stewart Maxwell to give game time to a number of  his fringe players.

Maxi said: “Losing out to Troon was more frustrating than disappointing if truth be told and the victory meant a lot to them judging by their celebrations at full time.

“They played a defensive 4-5-1 formation at home against us and we’ll need to learn our lessons and be patient in those circumstances though not for one minute am I expecting Beith to come through to Guys Meadow and try to shut up shop.

“They are playing with a lot of confidence right now and having two good footballing sides on show has all the makings of a cracking contest.”

Word on the team front reckons seasoned midfielder Gary McMenamin is a definite non-starter for the Rabs as he battles to recover from sciatic nerve damage in his back, however a shot in the arm comes from big stopper Craig Buchanan’s availability after serving a suspension for his red carding against Junior Cup opponents Colony Park .

Maxi admitted: “Craig has come in this season and tightened us up defensively but Davie Barr did well coming in as his replacement so we’ll wait until closer to kick off time before deciding who gets the nod.

“And we’ll do likewise with goalkeeper Michael McKinven who is battling to recover from a viral infection that kept him from getting a run-out in the midweek friendly.”

Beith may be forced into putting their unbeaten league record on the line without outstanding twin stoppers John Sheridan and Mark McLaughlin after both players sat out training this week as a result of the injuries picked up in last weekend’s 3-0 Scottish Junior Cup win over Vale of Clyde.

MIGHTY gaffer Johnny Millar  said: “Big Marky has a better chance than Shez whose  hamstring strain could be aggravated if he plays when not fully healed and we have to be careful in this respect.

“There is the possibility of neither of them being passed fit and if that happens then I’ll have no hesitation of bringing in Josh McArthur with Kevin McDonald beside him even though they will be up against a top notch forward line partnership in Sawyers and Watt.

“We also have Thomas Collins feeling unwell this week but his absence is well covered with Kenny McLean. Darren Christie and Archie (Ross McPherson) in contention for the striker jerseys.”

The only other Super league teams with  unbeaten records are leading Super First Division pair Kilsyth Rangers  and Shettleston.

League leaders Kilsyth have picked up more  points on the road than at Duncansfield and will not be too unhappy at the prospect of heading through to face Shotts Bon Accord.

Meanwhile Shettleston, for whom Peter Weatherson continues to score for fun, are strongly fancied to get the better of Cumbernauld United at Greenfield Park.
