Stuart Armstrong has urged Celtic to stand up and be counted as they take on Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night.

Brendan Rodgers’ side have taken two points so far in Group C and badly need some kind of result against the Catalans if they are to hang onto their slim ambitions of maintaining European football beyond Christmas.

Neil Lennon’s side beat Barca at Celtic Park just over four years ago with Tony Watt the hero of the night – and Armstrong is looking for someone to fulfil a similar role this week.

“I don’t care who it is who become the new Tony Watt - as long as it’s someone!” he joked.

And Armstrong has also insisted that Celtic have absorbed some of the lessons from that chastening 7-0 defeat in the Nou Camp.

“We have a chance to redeem ourselves on Wednesday after the disappointing away game.

“We’re looking forward to it.

“We can’t forget that game in the Nou Camp entirely. We don’t want to dwell on it either, but it’s important we learn from it and make sure we don’t make the same mistakes again.

“That one game didn’t set a trend for the rest of them. We had good performances against Man City and Monchengladbach.

“We showed we learned from the games.

“Let’s not forget Barcelona are a top quality team. They are one of - if not the- best in the world.

“But in saying that, the way we lost was so disappointing.

“We’ve improved since then and hopefully we bring that in to Wednesday.

“It’s the Champions League - all the games are high pressure. There’s so much up for grabs on Wednesday night. Of course it’s a big ask.

“But if we want to be in Europe after Christmas then we need to take something from the game. Every game in the Champions League is a must win.”

Leigh Griffiths is a doubt for the game against Barclona as he recuperates from a hamstring injury sustained while on Scotland duty but Armstrong, who has come to the fore in recent weeks in that central role in Rodgers’ team, believes that there are goals throughout the current Hoops side.

“That’s a big thing and when you have a squad you need to rely on everyone,” he said.

“There’s rotation that comes with that but we have guys like Tom Rogic, Patrick Roberts, Scott Sinclair, who can all chip in with goals, which is what we need.”

Armstrong scored the only goal of the game on Friday night as Celtic took all three points at Rugby Park to take his count to three this season, something he would like to add to as the campaign goes on.

“I’ve wanted to add goals to my game here,” he said. “I was average 10 a season at Dundee United so last season was disappointing to only get four.

“I’ve got three so far but hopefully I can keep building on it and getting in to positions where I can add to my tally.”
