CHARLIE MILLER hopes Rangers can lay the foundations for another crack at the Premiership next season by continuing to make progress on the road to recovery this term.

It has been a frustrating start to the campaign for Mark Warburton’s side as they have won just six of their first 13 outings on their top flight return.

The Gers are 11 points off the pace being set by Old Firm rivals Celtic and required a last-minute winner to see off Dundee at Ibrox on Saturday.

Finishing best of the rest is now the target this term but nine-in-a-row hero Miller knows Warburton’s side must prove that they are taking strides forward in the coming months.

He told SportTimes: “When you are playing for Rangers, you know that the fans expect you to win every game.

“I know we have just come back to the league but there is still that expectation there on the players. Mark will know that as well because he is at a massive club.

“We always want to win everything but it looks like second will need to be the aim now. Next season will be a big one for Mark.

“If they finish second this year it will be a good season but you can’t accept second place. Let’s see how we go and I am sure they will improve in the coming months.

“They will want to be as close as possible to Celtic but we know the strength they have in the transfer market.

“If Rangers can get a good run towards the end of the season then that will be a good platform for next year.”

After leaving it late against the Dees at the weekend, Warburton will hope his side are more comfortable winners when they face Partick Thistle on Saturday.

The Gers have a double-header with Hearts and clash with Aberdeen to come in the next few weeks as they look to put an inconsistent start to the season behind them.

And former Ibrox midfielder Miller hopes Warburton’s side can lay down a marker of their intentions in the tight Premiership battle.

He said: “They will want to get second, definitely, and the budgets would suggest that they should get it.

“Budgets help you pay big wages but it is on the football park where you do your talking. Rangers are getting there slowly but surely.

“Aberdeen won’t be easy to overtake but they will give it a good go. They have a hard game against Partick Thistle on Saturday and then the games against Hearts and Aberdeen.

“You can’t take anything for granted in the league and that will be a difficult run. But if Rangers can get a couple of wins in there then that would put them in a good position.”
