Hoops defender Erik Sviatchenko has told the rest of Scottish football; catch us if you can.

Celtic lifted the first piece of silverware on offer last night at Hampden with a comfortable 3-0 win over Aberdeen to claim the Betfred League Cup.

Brendan Rodgers’ side have not lost a goal in the competition and Sviatchenko has warned that Celtic do not plan on loosening their grip on the domestic game any time soon.

“We will do everything we can to be untouchables,” said the Danish defender.

“I hope this is just the start for us.

“We have been on a great run over the last few months. With a trophy it is nice to be able to look at it and it shows that we have been doing so well. But we do not want to stop. It is such a good feeling to enjoy seeing our hard work paying off. We will do our best to keep improving now.”

However, while Celtic will strive to maintain their unbeaten domestic form, Sviatchenko was looking forward to a little time off this week as the Hoops reflected on their 100th trophy win.

“We have a plan that is way out there in terms of what we want to achieve,” he said. “But that doesn’t mean that sometimes you shouldn’t stop and enjoy the moment.

“It is all about some champagne and a little bit of happiness. It is important that we get to look at what we have achieved.

“That doesn’t mean we aren’t pushing on, it is just about taking a breather. We will take a breather, we will enjoy the celebrations and then we will get back down to business in the league. But it is important that we stop and reflect on what we have managed to achieve already.”

And Sviatchenko was effusive in his praise of Celtic captain Scott Brown.

The Hoops skipper has had an outstanding start to the season and produced another significant performance in the middle of the park against the Dons.

“He is amazing at the moment,” said Sviatchenko. “He is so fit, so quick and he anticipates everything. He has just this positivity about him and I am proud to be playing with him as our captain.”

Celtic have not lost a goal domestically now in their last eight games, something that Sviatchenko has taken considerable satisfaction from.

“It is special for me to keep clean sheets,” he said. “That is important for me and important for the team but we want to keep going forward. We are performing so well and we want to keep on going.

“Myself and Jozo [Simunovic] are doing well but Mikael Lustig, Emilio Izaguirre and Brown have all played a part in making us such a dominant team. There is a collective here. We show that on the pitch and we take so much pride in our performance.

“The manager has brought opportunities. He is so positive but he doesn’t just talk positively – he is putting out a team on the pitch that brings results. He has set us up as a team in a way that suits the players here. We are forward thinking all the time and teams find us difficult to cope with.”
