FORMER Rangers star Davie Provan, who sadly passed away last weekend, spent 12 years at Ibrox and made more than 250 competitive appearances, scoring 11 goals. A few of his many highlights at Ibrox were playing a crucial role in the Light Blues’ treble-winning season of 1964, featuring in the 1967 European Cup-Winners’ Cup final team which lost 1-0 to Bayern Munich and being inducted into the Rangers Hall of Fame…

ANDY (Balloch) – David Provan's sad passing away stirred fond memories among us fans of a certain age group of his role in Rangers' successes during his Ibrox career. He won all the major domestic honours and gained International recognition with 5 caps, but where did he feature in Rangers' European campaigns at that time?

The highlight of David's European involvement was in the European Cup-Winners’ Cup competition of 1966/67.

David filled the left-back role throughout the campaign which saw Rangers narrowly lose out to Bayern Munich by a single extra-time goal in the final in Nuremberg.

He also featured for Rangers in the other major European competitions of the day, the European Champions Cup in seasons 1963/64 and 1964/65, the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1968/69 and the European Cup-Winners’ Cup in 1969/70.

TONY (Glenboig) – Remembering the late Davie Provan as our manager at Albion Rovers it was proudly mentioned that he brought Rovers their only League Championship prior to winning the SPFL League Two in 2014/15. Is this correct?

David Provan's Albion Rovers team did win the Scottish League Second Division in 1988/89 to bring a rare Championship to Cliftonhill.

This Championship however was not their first but it did end a 55-year drought, Rovers' previous league success being in season 1933/34, when they won the Scottish League Division Two.

After such a barren spell it would feel like a first for a generation of Rovers' fans and label David's tenure a success in Albion Rovers' history.

JOHN BUCHAN (via email) – Could you tell the crowd when Charlie Nicholas made his debut for Aberdeen? I’m sure that Charlie’s appearance just about doubled the crowd.

That is probably fairly accurate. Charlie’s home debut was on January 16, 1988.

The opponents were Dunfermline Athletic for a Premier Division match.

Our book of match reports gives the attendance as 21,000. Aberdeen won the match 1-0.

In December 1987 matches against a similar standard of opposition saw crowds of 9,000 against Morton and 8,000 against St Mirren.
