CLYDE blew Arbroath aside to book their William Hill Scottish Cup  fourth-round place place against Stirling Albion with a rousing 5-0 victory at Broadwood.

Peter MacDonald hit a penalty double, Scott McLaughin curled home a delightful free kick and David Gormley rattled in two cracking strikes.

Darren Miller set the tone for a positive performance from the home side with a fizzing 25-yard drive in the early exchanges that warmed the hands of Ricky Gomes in the visiting goal.

Clyde got their noses in front in 14 minutes when Ricky Little barged Gormley over from a Miller free kick and MacDonald despatched the resultant spot-kick in ferocious style.

Barry Ferguson’s side doubled their lead seven minutes minutes later when Scott McLaughlin showed his prowess with a dead ball as he curled home from 22 yards.

Clyde almost went further ahead when Gormley ignored shouts for offside to send a volley goalward with his effort only just clearing Gomes’ bar.

Steven Doris had Arbroath’s first chance in 37 minutes when he twisted away from Ross Perry but the defender managed to get a foot in to divert his effort wide.

Just before the half-time whistle, Clyde were awarded a second penalty when Gormley fell as he chased a loose ball with Colin Hamilton in close attendance and MacDonald despatched his effort low past Gomes.

Clyde started the second half strongly and Gomes had to leap high to turn away a shot from Sean Higgins from the edge of the box.

With the tie well in their grasp, Clyde midfielder Miller looked to have committed a major act of folly in 53 minutes when he went head to head with Jassem Sukar on the touchline but both players were only yellow-carded.

Ferguson withdrew shortly afterwards,  but the move backfired as his replacement, Matty Flynn, was shown a straight red card midway through the half for a lunge at Hamilton.

The 10 men were not put off by Flynn’s dismissal and they added a fourth with 18 minutes left when Gormley combined with substitute Scott Ferguson before shooting high into the net from 18 yards.

Arbroath strived for a consolation but the home defence stood firm and a fine night for Ferguson’s side ended in spectacular style in the last minute when Gormley thumped home from 25 yards.

To rub salt into visiting wounds, Clyde goalkeeper John Gibson made a terrific injury-time stop to keep out Bryan Prunty’s header.

In a replayed third-round tie at the Arena/Stadium, Dumbarton were upset by Junior side Bonnyrigg Rose 1-0. The Midlothian side will now entertain Hibernian after former Elgin and Brechin midfielder Adam Nelson struck with a left-foot shot from outside the box with just four minutes of normal time remaining.
