CELTIC had a comfortable 3-0 victory over Aberdeen in the Betfred Cup Final less than two weeks ago at Hampden, but it was a different story when the clubs met for the first time in a League Cup Final in 1976…

JOHN (Newlands) Can you tell how many times Celtic have played Aberdeen in the League Cup Final and who managed the teams ?

Celtic and Aberdeen have met twice in the Scottish League Cup Final. Their first encounter was on November 6, 1976, at Hampden Park.

Aberdeen won the match 2-1 after extra-time, thanks to goals from Drew Jarvie and Davie Robb.

Kenny Dalglish, from the penalty spot, was the Celts scorer. Aberdeen were managed then by Ally McLeod and Celtic’s boss was Jock Stein.

The second meeting was on March 19, 2000, when Celtic won 2-0. Over 50,000 fans saw two non-Scots, Vidar Riseth and Tommy Johnson, score for Celtic.

Aberdeen were managed by the Dane Ebbe Skovdahl while Celtic, who had just sacked John Barnes a month earlier, were led by Kenny Dalglish.

AULD JIMMY (Bearsden) Your answer to my previous question about Rangers' goalkeepers has raised another debate with the same pal trying to upstage my football knowledge, this time with a little tipple as a side bet. This time he claims a match he saw at Tynecastle when Hearts heavily defeated Rangers was Bobby Brown's last game as Rangers' first team goalkeeper. I disagree and claim he played a few times later although he was no longer first choice. Who is correct?

He is referring to the opening game of season 1952/53 at Tynecastle when Hearts inflicted a 5-0 defeat on Rangers in a League Cup Section match. George Niven replaced Brown in the next match and held the position for remainder of the season.

Niven continued the following season, 1953/54, before Brown took over in November for the league and shared the jersey in Scottish Cup matches.

Brown was still around the next two seasons but made only eight appearances to Niven's thirty-three in 1954/55, before making three appearances in 1955/56, his final game as first team custodian for Rangers being on January 21, 1956, in a 3-0 victory over East Fife at Ibrox. Enjoy your tipple.

The teams that day might remind you of the players of that era.

Rangers: Brown, Caldow, Little, McColl, Young, Rae, Scott, Simpson, Kichenbrand, Baird and Hubbard.

East Fife: Steedman, Addie, S. Stewart, Christie, Finlay, McLennan, J. Stewart, Leishman, Wright, Bonthrone and Mathew.
