MARTYN WAGHORN hopes Rangers can keep up their Premiership momentum after clinching a third successive top flight win on Friday night.

The striker marked his return to the starting line-up with a brace at New Douglas Park as Mark Warburton’s side beat Hamilton 2-1.

After home wins over Aberdeen and Hearts, it was another important victory for the Light Blues as they strengthened their grip on second spot in the standings.

Rangers are back in action this Saturday when they host Inverness Caley Thistle before Warburton’s side round off the year with fixtures against St Johnstone and Celtic.

And Waghorn is determined to add more points to their tally in the coming days as the Gers bid to pull clear in the race to be best of the rest this term.

He said: “It was crucial just to keep the momentum going going into a busy schedule.

“It is always nice to win games back-to-back and playing for Rangers you need to do that.

“It was important that we built on the two good performances that we produced at home. We have come away, got the three points and now it is on to the next one.

“It would be nice to keep the winning run going. Having a week off is going to be difficult but to get a couple of weeks and good couple of performances is key.

“It is positive that we are going into the schedule on the back of a couple of wins and performances.

“That [to play in the Celtic game] is the aim but it is up to me to keep my place. I have to keep working hard, doing my bits on the training pitch and when it comes to a Saturday I have got to do my job.”

It has been a frustrating few weeks for Waghorn as he has found chances hard to come by and struggled to make an impact for Warburton’s side.

With Waghorn out of form, boss Warburton has put his faith in summer signing Joe Garner to lead the Light Blue attack.

The former Preston star has become a firm favourite with supporters and Waghorn is pleased to see his fellow forward making an impact at Ibrox.

He told RangersTV: “Joe is a completely different character than I was used to playing with last season, he throws himself about, works hard and battles for the ball.

“He gives us chances to win second balls high up on the pitch so he works hard for the team, you can see that in the last few weeks and the fans love it.

“It is something to build on going forward, Joe is a good lad and he puts his heart and soul in for the boys.”
