Celtic have shown that they are prepared to widen the gap between themselves and every other domestic team this break by further investing in the team – but that is not why they are looking to kick on.

Given the manner in which Celtic have dominated the domestic landscape, the next challenge now is to maintain and continue to be a regular in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League.

I know there is some chat that Celtic’s dominance domestically isn’t good for them as a club or good for the country, but I disagree.

I don’t think we saw any adverse reaction this season in the Champions League and a large part of that comes down to confidence. When you are winning games and playing the kind of football that Celtic have been under Brendan Rodgers then you go into games with self-belief.

They have also shown an ability to raise their game to compete with the best on a European platform so I don’t buy into the theory that Celtic holding court in Scotland hinders them when they step out of the European environment.

So, while they will look to kick on and in doing so they will put further daylight between themselves and the rest of the league given the resources they currently have to hand, that isn’t their motivation for doing so.

The focus now is on continual improvement and a quest to get to the next level.

I have always followed the advice of Jock Stein that all you can do is concentrate on yourself. You need to look to keep your own house in order and then see what follows on from that.

Certainly, what you would have to say just now is that everything that Rodgers has touched in his time at Celtic has turned to gold.

I said last week in my column that my own belief is the fact he is bringing in youngsters like Kouassi Eboue augers well for the long-term future. I suspect that Rodgers is relishing getting his teeth into the job at Celtic and the 19-year-old is not an established player who is arriving on the scene but rather another who fits into the mould of an up-and-coming, a business mould that has worked pretty well for Celtic over the last five years.

I suspect we will see Celtic endeavour to kick on now with further new arrivals. The inclusion in this season’s Champions League has given them the resources to do so and it is all about establishing a foundation at the club where Celtic being in that environment and competing against the very best is part and parcel of the season.

I would still like to see another striker and possibly another central defender brought in with one eye on the qualifiers this summer.

Jozo Simunovic and Erik Sviatchenko have formed the basis of a good partnership this term at the heart of the defence while Kolo Toure is an able deputy, but it is a rare season where you will go through having your strongest XI available to you at all times.

Another interesting one for me is the future of Patrick Roberts. James Forrest has had a new lease of life under Rodgers and Scott Sinclair has made an outstanding contribution since arriving on the final days of the last transfer window, but I do think that Roberts has something special too.

He is still young and will have caught the eye of Pep Guardiola when he scored for Celtic down at the Etihad last month in the draw against Manchester City.

The English side paid £12m to Fulham for Roberts so I don’t know if there is any realistic prospect of him staying in Glasgow for the long-term but it is a position and an area that could require some thought.

However, as Celtic jet back into the considerably chillier climate in Glasgow from their winter break in Dubai there will be no let up as they look to kick on again, The three-week lay-off will give them an extra jag and it will be about trying to get their hands on the Treble.

Going through the season unbeaten is not the be all and end all but it would be an incredible achievement.

The team have been playing some great football and they are enjoyable to watch just now.

Put it this way; it tells you everything you need to know that all the tickets for the game against Albion Rovers have been sold out already.

It is the enthusiasm of the supporters and their desire to put their hands in their pockets to support the team that tells you everything.
