Ross Forbes says he isn't entirely sure why Morton are unbeatable at Cappielow at the moment, he just hopes that their undefeated home run keeps rolling on as long as possible.

Jim Duffy’s men haven’t lost in Greenock in the Championship since Raith Rovers beat them by a single goal in March last year, and a win over the same opposition on Saturday extended that sequence to 14 league games.

With the Ton flying high in third place in the table though, it is of little surprise that Forbes cites the burgeoning belief within the Morton ranks as a possible factor in their imperious form.

“I can’t really put my finger on why we do so well at home, but it is some unbeaten run we’ve been on,” Forbes said.

“Everybody works hard for each other in this team, we’re always a hard-working side, and when you have the home fans at Cappielow behind you then that can help as well.

“There’s a lot of confidence and the boys are playing well, and I think when you get into that winning mentality it helps. It can be flipped the other way when you’re losing week-in, week-out and get stuck in a rut.

“It’s just nice for us to keep winning and hopefully it can continue.”

The victory over Raith takes Morton to within five points of second-placed Dundee United with a game in hand.

While the Cappielow punters may be getting giddy at the prospect of chasing the Terrors down, Forbes says the players are working hard at keeping their feet on the ground.

“To be honest, right now the main focus for us is just to get as many points on the board as possible,” he said. “I don’t think we can be looking ahead like that and get too carried away with ourselves.

“We just want to keep working hard every week and try to get as many points as we can.

“The position we’re in just now it’s looking quite good, but we still have 16 games left so there’s still a long way to go and you never know what can happen between now and the end of the season.”

Forbes claimed the opening goal for Morton on Saturday, but he was honest enough to admit there had been a touch of fortune about his attempted cross that sailed into the net.

“I can’t claim that I meant it, but if you put crosses into the right area then you see it happening quite often and I was lucky enough that it went in,” he said.

“It’s the best area to put a cross, defenders don’t know what to do and as you seen on Saturday, the goalkeeper doesn’t know whether to come or stay and gets caught in two minds.”

Forbes was pleased for teammate Lawrence Shankland to get Morton’s second with a goal on his debut, and he has backed him to show what a quality player he is while at the club.

“I played with Shanks at Dunfermline and I saw there that he was a really good player and he scored a lot of goals there,” he said.

“He obviously hadn’t been doing too well at the start of the season at St Mirren in a struggling team, and that can be hard sometimes.

“Everybody knows how good a player he is though, and if he gets the chances then he will definitely score goals.”

Falkirk visit Greenock on Saturday in Scottish Cup fourth round duty, but even though it is not in the league, Forbes says that Morton’s approach will be the same as it has been for every one of those unbeaten matches at home.

“We’ll treat it the same as any other game,” he said. “If it was in the league it would be nice to keep the run going, but we’ve obviously done well in the cup competitions in the last few years too.

“Another wee trip to Hampden would be a nice way to round off the year, but we’ll take Saturday first and see how that goes.”
