GRAEME MURTY reckons Rangers failed to show their true potential as they crashed to Old Firm defeat on Tuesday afternoon.

Celtic moved five points clear of their Glasgow counterparts and up to seventh spot in the Development League standings with a 1-0 win at Auchenhowie.

Calvin Miller netted the only goal of the game on the stroke of half-time to clinch victory for the Hoops and leave the Light Blues tenth in the table.

Boss Murty handed a start to defender David Bates following his permanent move from Raith Rovers last week, while midfielders Billy Gilmour and Liam Burt were also in action.

Burt spurned the Gers’ best chance of the game after a bright start from the Light Blues and there was no way back for the hosts after Miller opened the scoring.

And Murty was left frustrated with a below par performance from his side as they turn their attentions to the Scottish Youth Cup clash with Falkirk this weekend.

“I’m obviously disappointed," he told RangersTV. "I thought that Celtic deserved to win the game, and they could have won by more.

“My disappointment doesn’t come from the result though – it comes from the fact we only showed brief glimpses of the players’ true potential.

“When they were brave and played and shifted the ball quickly as we asked them to do, I thought they were excellent, but we didn’t do that enough.

“The players didn’t impose themselves on the game and I thought we were too passive and accepting of what Celtic were trying to do, and that is a real good lesson for them against stronger players.

“They need to be brave and the way we teach that is to show them video and actually say ‘right, this is when you did it, this is where you didn’t do it’ and look at the contrast as they will see it stark.”
