SUCCESS over Judd Trump was one of the best wins of his career according to Marco Fu after his 6-5 success in the first round of the Dafabet Masters.

The 39-year-old potter was 3-0 down but took the crucial frame before the mid-session interval with a stunning 130 break and followed that up with an 88 to make the score 3-2.

Both players made further centuries as the score moved along to 5-4 in Trump’s favour but a break of 80 took the game to a deciding frame which the Scottish Open champion took.

Fu admitted he was a relieved man after coming through the tense final frame and will face John Higgins’ conqueror Mark Allen in the quarter-final tomorrow.

“It’s one of the best wins of my career, the way it was going at 3-0 down against a top class player. Trump played very well, he didn’t give it away, I think I earned it at the end,” he said.

“It was a relief because I had done it the hard way.

“It was very difficult to handle the disappointment of the first session but I was pleased to play much better in the second session, took my chances better and got a bit of luck.”

Fu’s best run at the Masters came back in 2008 when he reached the semi-finals but his form in this match showed he is more than capable of repeating that feat this year.

He came from 4-1 down to beat John Higgins in the Scottish Open final in December and admitted that memories of that comeback was a source of comfort when he trailed yesterday early on.

“When I was 3-0 down I was definitely thinking of that match against John,” he added.

“Sometimes things are out of your control and you have to wait for your chances but I know if I got a chance I could do the damage in the balls which I did.”

Meanwhile, the 27-year-old Trump was frustrated at his lack of luck after seeing Fu profit from a fluked red in the final frame in the break prior to his match-winning century.

“It has obviously all come down to luck in the end hasn’t it,” Trump said.

“After he missed the red by quite a distance and then fluked one. He’s fluked the ball in the last frame and if that didn’t happen then who knows?”
