Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers has acknowledged that Scotland’s FIFA World Cup qualifier against England on June 10th is a considerable headache for the Parkhead side.

The Scottish Cup final is due to be played on May 27th, before Gordon Strachan’s side take on England at Hampden, with up to six Celtic players potentially involved in the clash.

Scott Brown has described the decision whether or not to continue playing with international duty as the biggest decision of his career and with Champions league qualifiers coming on 11th and 12 July, there is little respite for those involved for their respective countries.

And Rodgers has admitted that the lack of time for recovery and preparation is potentially difficult.

“For players it’s not great,” said the Celtic manager. “Some who don’t make the cup final finish a bit before that. That’s them finished but they’ve got to kick on again. So it’s not a good date at all.

“If you look at June right the way through there’s not a free date. Look at the UEFA games, it’s all blocked out for games across Europe.

“That comes into consideration for a senior player. If you are 17, 18, 19 … you will play all the time.

“I remember talking with Arjen Robben at Chelsea and he said he hadn’t had a break for seven years. Not one summer free for seven years. You can say you are getting well paid etc but that’s the job. The better they are they get paid more.

“That still doesn’t stop your legs being tired or mental fatigue.”

And Rodgers has maintained that the lack of time to prepare for games that underpin the season was a shock to the season.

“I remember being down in England and going on holiday and seeing that the Scottish teams were back,” he said.

“It was incredible because you just felt like you were winding down and getting into your rest. This is why you can’t compare down there with up here. It’s totally different. It really is.

“The challenges up here are to get your team prepared with the minimum rest you could possibly need because you are going into European qualifiers.

“Aberdeen were back on what June 12 because they are playing qualifiers for the Europa League. We were the 22nd.

“Those challengers are nowhere near that down south. Down south your end game in pre-season is the first game of the season. Everything is build up over four or five weeks.”

Despite that, Rodgers will not look to influence Brown’s decision on whether he stays on for Strachan or not.

The midfielder is expected to tell the Scotland boss his thoughts before the squad is named for the March qualifier against Slovenia.

“It has to be right for him,” said Rodgers. “So knows where he needs to be at, in order to play the game at the level he wants to be at. He’s in a different stage of his life now. He knows that. Of course I can give him my aspect on it and my feelings on it. He will speak to Gordon I’m sure. He only wants what’s best for Scotland but he also has to have a look out for himself. He’s at that stage now where he has to look after himself. I’m sure he’ll make the decision in time.”

“I’ve not thought about it. It’s a difficult one. An international manager thinks about the now but you’ve got to think about the future.

“I think we all understood the reasons why Scott came back to play in the England game.

“Going forward, he’s got some big decisions to make.

“I think he’s clear in his own mind how he sees it evolving but like I say my worry is for Celtic and I want to make sure he’s the best he can possibly be for Celtic.”
