JAK ALNWICK hopes he can follow Fraser Forster’s lead and take his career to the next level after making the move to Glasgow.

The keeper completed a £250,000 switch to Rangers on Monday night as he put pen-to-paper on a three-and-a-half-year deal with the Light Blues.

Alnwick was a team-mate of former Celtic star Forster at Newcastle United and made his debut for the Toon in a Premier League win over Chelsea.

Forster was an integral part of Neil Lennon’s squad before he clinched a £12million move to Southampton and is now an example to look up to for the new Gers shot-stopper.

Alnwick said: “It's funny, he was born 30 seconds away from my house and we crossed paths at Newcastle. We grew up in Stocksfield, in the same village and played for the same youth teams and stuff like that.

“I think if you ask Fraser himself he was a late developer - even through the academy at Newcastle he was nowhere near where he is now. He hit a certain age and kicked on.

“He was a striker at one point and a rugby player and they didn't know what to do with him because he was so big.

“But he worked hard every single day and you would see him in the gym every day or outside practicing his kicking. I think he will be England's number one.

“He was always good with me. He came up here, did brilliantly for Celtic in the Champions League and got his move down to Southampton and got involved in the England set-up.

“It was nice to cross paths with him because he is a top keeper.

“I was fourth choice goalkeeper but I was training with the first team every day.

“There was Fraser, Tim Krul and Steve Harper - a good mix of different styles of goalkeepers and different ages. I learned a lot from all of them. I try to build my game around what I learned.”
