Callum McGregor has urged his Celtic colleagues to create a legacy at the club this season.

The Parkhead side made their own bit of history this weekend as they went on a 27-game unbeaten run from the start of the season, a sequence of results that enabled them to overtake the 26-game mark first put down by the Lisbon Lions 50 years ago.

And the midfielder wants to establish a record that proves to substantial to be caught any time soon.

"For us to go 27 games unbeaten from the start of the season is unbelievable and maybe in 50 or 60 years people will be talking about the run that we went on," said McGregor.

“You know what the manager is like, He’s relentless and that was his message after the game – ‘’Yes, it’s great that we’ve broken the record but now can we stretch it and go unbeaten for as long as we possibly can

“ It will be tough but we’ll just look at the next game and prepare properly for that and see where that takes us.

“What we’re aiming for now is to try and create a record than can never be broken, That’s what we’re driving for.

“It’s good to have targets like that because it gives you an extra edge to your game. But, as professionals, we want to win every game anyway.

“That’s now what the boys are driving for so we can stretch the record so it can never be beaten. Having these targets can be nice. It’s a wee added edge for us. Obviously to be professional going into every game we want to win anyway. But having an extra target on the side can help us.”

Martin O'Neill's Celtic side hold a current British record of going on a 25-game winning run in season 2003-04 and that is the next record in line for Brendan Rodgers' side to aim for.

So far the Hoops have won 17 league games in succession this term - the blot on the copybook that with the draw in Inverness still rankles with Rodgers - but it is conceivable that they could set their own new benchmark this season.

“That could be our next target," said McGregor. "For us as a group the reason we’ve been so successful is that we’re just relentless.

"We go into every game preparing properly and trying to win. That’s the next step for us.”
