RANGERS could look to appoint Alex McLeish as interim manager between now and the end of the season as attentions turn to recruiting Mark Warburton’s successor at Ibrox.

The club confirmed on Friday evening that Warburton, assistant manager David Weir and Frank McParland, the Head of Recruitment, had left after their resignations were accepted. Graeme Murty, the Under-20 manager, will take the side when Morton visit Ibrox in the Scottish Cup.

The Gers board will then look to step up the process of filling the position on a more permanent basis and it is understood that McLeish is one of the candidates to step in for the final 14 Premiership matches as Rangers attempt to finish second this season.

McLeish spent five years at Ibrox and won seven honours, including the Treble in season 2002/2003 as Rangers clinched the SPL title on the final day of the campaign.

The 58-year-old went on to manage Scotland before moving to England and having stints with Birmingham City, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest. His last two positions have been in Belgium and Egypt with Genk and Zamalek respectively.

The appointment of an interim boss would give chairman Dave King and his fellow directors time to consider their options before making a move to recruit Warburton’s long-term successor ahead of potential Europa League qualifiers in June and the new Premiership campaign.

Former Ajax and Internazionale boss Frank de Boer has insisted that there had been no contact from the Ibrox board but stated that he would be willing to speak to Rangers about a possible return to the club.

Chairman King released a statement to supporters on Saturday afternoon regarding the process that culminated in Warburton’s departure and the search for the next Light Blues boss.

King said: “We are now in the process of reviewing the best interim and long-term solution for ensuring that a modern and robust footballing structure is put in place that will continue with and entrench the footballing philosophy that we have in place. We also must protect and support the marvellous work that has been achieved by the Academy over the last two years.”

As part of the overhaul, SportTimes understands that Rangers could look to bring in a Director of Football to oversee their operations at Ibrox and Auchenhowie. John Park, the former Head of Football Development at Celtic, is one name that is being considered. Park is credited with the recruitment of the likes of Victor Wanyama and Virgil van Dijk, both of whom Celtic sold for a significant profit.

Paul Mitchell, who is currently working his notice period at Tottenham Hotspur, and Stuart Webber, the Head of Football Operations at Huddersfield Town, are also on Rangers’ shortlist as the board examine the possibility of a new structure in their football department.
