DAVE King, the Rangers chairman and major shareholder, today confirmed the Ibrox club could bring in an interim manager to take charge of the team until the end of the season and appoint a permanent replacement for Mark Warburton in the summer.

Rangers announced on Friday night that they had accepted the resignations of Warburton, his assistant Davie Weir and head of recruitment Frank McParland – a claim the Englishman immediately denied.

The former Brentford manager and his associates are set to take the Ladbrokes Premiership club to court seeking compensation believed to be in the region of £1 million and will be represented by the English League Managers Association.

Rangers have appointed Graeme Murty, the under-20 coach, as caretaker and the former Scotland internationalist oversaw the 2-1 win over Greenock Morton at Ibrox in the fifth round of the William Hill Scottish Cup yesterday.

But King, in a brief statement given to the Jim White Show on talkSPORT this morning, revealed that the Ibrox board could appoint somebody on a temporary basis between now and the end of the 2016/17 campaign.

Rangers are currently in third place in the Premiership table behind Aberdeen, who have a game in hand against Motherwell at Pittodrie on Wednesday evening, and just six points ahead of a resurgent Hearts team who defeated them 4-1 at Tynecastle earlier this month.

King admitted at the start of the season that he expected Rangers to finish second in the top flight and qualify for the Europa League given the level of investment in the squad in the summer.

Alex McLeish, who won two titles in the five years he spent in charge of Rangers between 2001 and 2006, is currently out of work and has admitted he would speak to his former club about making a return either on a temporary or permanent basis.

Elsewhere, Billy Davies, the former Motherwell, Derby County and Nottingham Forest manager, is also seeking employment and is among the bookmakers’ favourites to come in.

The latest statement from King said: “We have already put in place a process to ensure that the best long-term solution is implemented for the club.

“But due to the obvious time constraints we may have to consider an interim solution. Supporters will be further updated once we have something definite to communicate.”
