JAK ALNWICK reckons he has already improved his game since moving to Ibrox - despite having not yet made his Rangers bow.

The keeper was Mark Warburton’s final signing of the January window as he made a £250,000 move north of the border from Port Vale.

He was on the bench for the Premiership meetings with Hearts and Ross County as Warburton saw his side drop five points in his last games in charge of the Light Blues.

Caretaker boss Graeme Murty stuck with number one Wes Foderingham for the Scottish Cup win over Morton on Sunday.

But Alnwick believes he is reaping the rewards of working at Auchenhowie on a daily basis as he bids to force his way into the Gers starting line-up.

He said: “I would say the training is more intense than what I have been used to, no disrespect to Port Vale’s players but we have a better quality here and they have been at the top top level for a long time.

“The intensity is always good where in the lower leagues it is a lot about fighting and scrapping and everyone to their own but the intensity and the quality is a lot better.

“The part we want to play as keepers here is massive and a lot of it is about possession football and we do do a good balance.

“That is only good because sometimes as keepers you feel a bit left out of the team and it’s a case of us over there and the rest of the squad over here but here everyone is together and it is nice.

“No matter where I have been I have sensed myself improving throughout my whole career and here is another big step.”

Having seen Matt Gilks become frustrated with a spot on the bench in the first half of the campaign, Alnwick is now looking to do something that the experienced shot-stopper couldn’t and claim the Gers gloves.

Foderingham has been one of Rangers’ most impressive players this term as he has handled the step up to the Premiership well in recent months.

The 26-year-old is set to retain his spot for the trip to Dundee on Sunday and Alnwick is pleased to be working alongside him on a daily basis.

“Straight away Jim Stewart is getting into us and he is helping a lot and as well working with Wes,” he told RangersTV.

“Wes is a top goalkeeper, I don’t think at Port Vale I had that push to drive me forward and I kind of had to do that myself so competing with him is a good thing for me.

“It is very similar here to how it was at Newcastle. At Port Vale when you are playing in League One it is normally Saturday, Tuesday games so it is hit and miss with training whereas here there is a lot of focus on training leading up to one big game at the end of the week.

“In League One with two games in a week it is about preparing your body right for the game so it has been different but it has been a very nice change.”
