CRAIG GORDON'S contract talks have been put on hold according to sources close to the player, though Celtic remain confident the goalkeeper will commit his long-term future to the club.

There is a theory Gordon might sit tight and wait to see if Chelsea renew their interest in him this summer, however Celtic have firmly re-iterated that their player is not for sale.

The 34-year-old was subject of bids from the Stamford Bridge club during the last week of the transfer window, with Celtic booting them out as they looked to keep the goalkeeper at the club in the long-term.

However, with Real Madrid still believed to be keen on making a move for Chelsea’s current number one Thibaut Courtois this summer, it could be that the English Premier league leaders revisit Celtic in an attempt to entice the Scotland internationalist south when the transfer window re-opens in June.

Celtic, though, remain determined that they will keep Gordon, with sources at the club relaxed about securing the player on an extended contract.

The Parkhead side are also insistent that the goalkeeper still has a year of his current deal to run and is under contract until June 2018.

There had been some ambiguity about an additional year being activated on Gordon’s current deal, but Celtic maintain that he will not be a free agent this summer.

It is understood that Gordon has been keen to talk to Chelsea last month when their interest in him became apparent, however Celtic stood firm with their insistence that the player would not be allowed to leave the club in January.

Brendan Rodgers was unequivocal about Gordon remaining as his goalkeeper for the club’s push to get back into the group stages of the UEFA Champions League again this summer and Celtic believe that the 34-year-old will remain in the Hoops.

Sources close to Gordon have intimated that the player is looking for a four-year extension to remain in Glasgow.

Only this weekend Rodgers dismissed a story linking him with Rennes goalkeeper Benoit Costil. “Tell me why I would be interested in him?” Rodgers said when asked about a story that had appeared in L’Equippe newspaper in France suggesting Celtic were keen on signing the 29-year-old this summer.

“Why would I want him when I have Craig Gordon who’s the sweeper ‘keeper and who’s top class?”

Chelsea had looked at Gordon as a direct replacement for Asmir Begovic, who had been subject of a £12m bid from Bournemouth.

The English would not allow Begovic to leave until a replacement had been secured, which failed to transpire in the final days of the window.

Celtic remain calm in the face of on-going negotiations but it remains to be seen whether Gordon wants to sit tight and wait to see of Chelsea return to the table this summer.
