It’s incumbent upon any football club to get the best manager or head coach that they can get. Now, if you look at current managers at Scotland who might be within the reach of Rangers, then you would have to say that Derek McInnes is one of the foremost names that would come to mind.

So, I could fully understand it if Rangers were to target Derek McInnes, but from his point of view, would he want to go to Ibrox at a time when things seem very unstable and very insecure?

There doesn’t really seem to be any long-term plan in place at Ibrox, and money appears to be tight as well. It doesn’t seem as if the ability for a manager to go in and spend money is there at Rangers just now.

So, if you were in Derek McInnes’s shoes, you would have to wonder if that would be a good career move.

You can obviously point to the fact that he might be a fan of the club and he’s played there in the past, but when somebody is a manager of such long-standing in the game as he is now, I’m not sure that counts for much.

Obviously, I do think that anyone in any profession will listen to offers if they feel it is a good one, but I would question on a long-term basis, if that would be something that would be a good career move for Derek McInnes.

He is doing a magnificent job at Aberdeen right now, and you have to say his side look much stronger than Rangers do.

Second-place is the target that Derek McInnes has set for his men. They have managed it for the last two years and they want to do it this year with Rangers there as competition.

I think now with a six-point lead and 13 games to go, which you could argue is effectively a seven- point lead given that Rangers’ goal difference is so poor, that looks as though it may be a gap too large for Rangers to bridge.

When you take into account the fact that Rangers also still have to play Celtic twice and Aberdeen only have to play them once more, particularly with the form Celtic are in where they just don’t look like dropping points anywhere, then I think that Aberdeen are entitled to believe that they have a healthy lead and it will be one they will be looking to protect at all costs.

It’s nine wins out of 10 for the Pittodrie side, and huge credit has to be given to Derek McInnes. It all stems back to the game at Motherwell just before Christmas that we covered on BT Sport.

I remember having a chat with Derek beforehand and he told me that with his personnel and with his formation he was really looking to go back to basics, and that’s what has brought Aberdeen such success.

They have gone back to what they were a couple of years ago and back to what they do best as a team, and that has provided a platform for Jonny Hayes and Niall McGinn to flourish, Hayes in particular.

It has provided that solid base for Aberdeen with their two defensive midfielders. I think that I where Graeme Shinnie is at his best beside Ryan Jack.

The table doesn’t lie. Aberdeen are certainly in pole position to get second and from this point on they will be disappointed if they don’t manage it given the squad they have and given the way Rangers are floundering at the moment.

So when you take all of that into consideration, I think Derek McInnes would have to think long and hard before accepting any advance from Rangers if it does come. The grass isn’t always greener.
