BOBBY LENNOX was regarded by many Celtic fans as one of their greatest-ever players of all time, winning 11 League titles, eight Scottish Cups, four League Cups and, of course, was in the European Cup-winning Celtic team in 1967…

JOE D (Simshill)Did Bobby Lennox once score five goals in an away game against Partick Thistle?

Indeed he did.

The game in question was a League Cup tie on Saturday, August 31, 1968, at Firhill.

Lennox scored his first after only 15 seconds and went on to score four more in the 46th, 65th, 78th and 83rd minutes of the game.

Final score was 6-1 for Celtic with O'Neill scoring for Thistle and a Cumming own goal after eight minutes completing the six for the visitors.

Interesting footnote is that on the same day at Parkhead, Celtic reserves beat Thistle reserves 12-0.

Not a good day for The Jags.

IAN (Moodiesburn)Your recent reply about the Schoolboy International in 1952, in which Ralph Brand played, mentioned two players who revived a great memory for me.

It was my first floodlight and International game, when my Dad took me to Shawfield to see our Airdrie centre-half Doug Baillie play against an England team which included their much publicised youngster Duncan Edwards.

England won the game which I think might have been an Inter League match around 1955/56. From these few facts can you identify the game for me?

The venue and players you mention suggest this was not an Inter League match but an Under-23 International played on February 8, 1955, at Shawfield Stadium under floodlights, with Dougie Baillie at centre-half for Scotland and Duncan Edwards at left-half for England.

Match reports show England lost centre-forward Ayre to injury early in the game, and being a friendly match their travelling reserve, what they were called then, was allowed to replace him.

Anderson the replacement was a half-back, and Edwards moved forward to accommodate him and lead the attack in direct opposition to Baillie. England were not deterred by the reshuffle, going on to win 6-0 with Edwards scoring a hat-trick.

The Scottish team that night was:-

Duff (Hearts), Parker (Falkirk), Caldow (Rangers), Mackay (Hearts), Baillie (Airdrieonians), Holmes (St Mirren), Leggat (Aberdeen), Walsh (Celtic), Hill (Clyde), Wishart (Aberdeen), and McParland (Partick Thistle).

Hope this helps to refresh your memories.
